Lump Sum ?
The trouble with lump sum payments is that they don't get incorporated into ongoing pay rates and we usually end up being screwed. There are people in my office who only see the £££s and will happily surrender a (hypothetical example) £20/week allowance for a one-off £500, even after you point out to them they're losing over a grand a year, EVERY year, for just 25 weeks worth of money up front.
"Yeah, but it's £500 , so I'm gonna vote for it" is their stupid response
And because lump sums aren't put into basic pay, am I right in assuming they aren't pensionable, either ?
Q. Why is a postman like a disgruntled prostitute ?
A. Because he gets paid once and ends up being screwed twice

HH has it spot on which is why these things get voted in
Dave Ward did say that the union aren't interested in these lump sum deals,so by what they're saying we shouldn't have to vote on shite like that.
But then again

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I agree hertfordshirehog wholeheartedly. Over the last 4/5 years, our office has employed quite a few Polish, Somalians, Malaysians and Eastern bloc people. These people will sell their soul for a £1. They are here to earn at any cost and have to send £xx amount of money home every month regardless! The whole culture of our office has changed, the union were slow to adapt and a few strike calls have been thwarted as these new comers wont lose money for anything!. The past couple of years we have been educating them to show them they dont have to take the first £1 waved at them, but it is a long hard slog.

What woemc has seen is something I've noticed in my office, but maybe to a slightly lesser degree.
At the risk of sounding like a hypocrite, though, despite what I said before about lump sums....
If I were only three months from retirement, and RM wanted to bung me a £1000 lump sum to give up my £20/week ex-PHG allowance, I'd bite their stupid hands off
. I mean, why would any sane person in that position not vote 'YES' to giving up thirteen weeks of allowance (£260) if RM were stupid enough to pay me the same £1000 as everyone else, regardless of how many weeks/months/years of service they have to go ?
It would be nice to screw RM just once as a farewell gesture before retirement
BUT THOSE ARE THE ONLY CIRCUMSTANCES WHERE I WOULD EVER VOTE YES TO LOSING AN ALLOWANCE !!!
