Postman had 'no time' to deliver post

A POSTMAN hoarded away more than 7,000 pieces of mail because he did not have time to deliver it, a court heard.

Matthew O'Connor told Blackpool magistrates how he was left doing unpaid extra hours every day in an effort to complete his round.

The 22-year-old said he had complained to his Royal Mail bosses but was told "just get on with it".

An investigation into O'Connor of Lauderdale Avenue, Anchorsholme, began after items of undelivered junk mail were found on a council waste tip.

The items were traced back to O'Connor and Royal Mail officials were sent to raid his home.

Once inside the officers discovered more undelivered junk mail and eighty items of normal mail.

He was interviewed and he accepted he was responsible and said he had too much to do in his hours of work as a part time postie.

Steven Townley, defending, said: "My client's hours were 9am to 2pm.

"He should have arrived at the sorting office to find his round ready for delivery.

"But all too often he had to start by sorting his round himself.

"He was given the longest, hardest round and in the end used his own car at his own expense to try to get the work done.

"Day-in day-out he never managed to complete the round in his normal hours of work and ended up working extra unpaid hours."

The defence claims O'Connor's bosses at the Royal Mail were unsympathetic when he told them he was coming towards the end of his tether and it was their failure to step in which led him to take the mail home.

Mr Townley added: "He spoke to his line manager about it and was told – just get on with it, they were not supportive.

"He ended up taking mail home to prepare the items for delivery the following day but he became ill with stress and overwork and things built up."

The court heard how O'Connor had been paid extra for the delivery of junk mail and the Royal Mail had been paid by customers for its delivery house to house.

Mr Townley told magistrates his client had not meant to be dishonest and he had not rifled through the items, the job had merely gotten on top of him.

He added: "I must stress there was no dishonesty here – no opening of mail or looking for cash in greetings cards or credit cards.

"He simply could not cope with the job.

"When confronted with the undelivered items he fell on his sword and resigned."

Magistrates heard how O'Connor was about to join the RAF and could not do so if a court penalty was hanging over him.

He was sentenced to a six month conditional discharged for admitting two offences of delaying postal deliveries and was told to pay £100 court costs.

Why are they not in the dock of a court answering charges of wilful negligence of duty?
Until they are, the lad should be freed. He isn't the only employee responsible for non-delivery of mail in this particular instance.

Back in the early days I would have said he was just lazy but the state of things as they are now, I believe him and I would do anything for the public et al to realise that this is what is happening. Things have never been worse and while people still say to me "i wish I was finished at 3pm every day" I have to say "would u sit behind a desk or bar for 2 hours if u weren't getting paid?"

He could be lieing and talking bollox cause he is lazy,but the news report says a lot of what we know goes on.

He probably wasn't in the union. Those with a mind to "about to join the RAF" and not the most likely to join.
