POLICE are appealing for help in identifying a man in connection with an attempted incident of fraud in a Salisbury post office.

A man with a Scottish accent – believed to be Glaswegian and calling himself Colin – called Bishopdown Post Office in the One Stop Shop, claiming to be from the Alliance and Leicester Building Society at about 11.15am on Saturday, July 3.

He asked the member of staff he spoke to if they were familiar with the Emergency Cashment procedure in order to help a customer who had lost their withdrawal card.

The man advised the branch that the customer would come along shortly with an Alliance and Leicester cheque and passes them the cheque details together with the amount required.

He then gave the staff member a contact number to ring when the customer arrives so the transaction can be authorised and a transaction code passed.

Officers are keen to speak to the man pictured from CCTV footage in connection with this incident. He is described as white, about 5ft 10ins and about 20 years old. He is of slim build with short, neat mousey coloured hair.

The scam is one that has been used in other areas of the country and in this instance the cashier became suspicious and did not hand over any cash.

Anyone with any information in relation to this incident can contact Wiltshire Police on 0845 408 7000 or Crimestoppers where information can be left anonymously if they wish.
