Royal Mail is 'no longer important' to many businesses

Following the government announcement that the Royal Mail is to be privatised, a new report has revealed less than a quarter of businesses see traditional mail as an important part of their operations.

A survey of 5,000 companies found that just 23% still view mail as necessary. Londoners were found to value the postal service the least with 11% saying that ‘snail mail’ was important to their business. By comparison, the postal service was most prized in Yorkshire where 37% of businesses described the daily delivery as essential.

Andrew McGrath, executive director of Virgin Media Business, said: “The way in which we all communicate has changed beyond recognition over the last few years. This transformation is particularly pronounced in the south, where many businesses are now almost entirely dependent on mobile phones and email.

“That said, it’s vital that organisations don’t completely dismiss traditional comms channels in favour of trendy online tools. Companies must take a multi-channel approach to their communications, as this will allow them to build strong relationships through human contact, whilst benefiting from the mobility that modern tools allow.”

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) voiced concerns about the announcement to privatise the Royal Mail. A spokesman warned that while many large firms are able to use alternatives, many smaller companies remain heavily reliant on the service.

The spokesman said: “The only way to improve its service and win back lost business, is by pursuing ahead with modernisation. Firms want an efficient, value for money and reliable service, which Royal Mail must be able to deliver.”

These would be the same people crying the loudest if there was no postal service, I'm sure they'd love to pay a fortune to send something from one end of the country to the other (not everything fits down a telephone line ).

And a privatised RM will deliver this? How?
By charging more, collecting earlier and delivering later?

And yet again DGP, you are right. These are the very same businesses that moaned like heck during the strikes that we were destroying their business!

The firms i deliver to tell me they can't afford to have people sitting around waiting for the post to arrive, they under stand this isn't our fault, they have tried complaining to RM but all they get is we have till 3pm to deliver, if you want an earlier service it will cost you £X per week. So it's either having workers and office staff sitting around doing nothing waiting for orders, or find other means of getting orders or use other companies.

costing London businesses £200 million a week?

I believe the thing about flogging us off "it will be the answer to all our prays" is as short sighted as if we sell off all our utility firms it will give us some healty compertition bring prices down,what we have now is expensive gas,electric,telephone and water services which supply a substandard service which cost a fortune and makes money for thier share holders,if Royal Mail goes it will be for a song and it will cost a fortune to post anything and all these very short sighted firms that crack on about the late delivery,poor service and it will be better when they are sold off attitude will then be up the creek without a paddle,the old saying is They wont no what they had until it's gone,so when all these businesses whine and carry on like they do they only have themselves to blame,they should prepare themselves for higher costs and really crap service as like with the rest they are only going to be worried about making money for the share holders!
