A WOMAN who stole more than £25,000 after being put in charge of a village outreach post office has walked away from court with a suspended jail sentence.

Elizabeth Houghton ran the outreach facility alongside her village shop at Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir, near Grantham, after the local post office was shut as a result of a wave of closures across the county announced in December 2007.

Lincoln Crown Court heard Houghton took around £500 a week from the Post Office for nearly a year before auditors arrived to carry out a spot check.

Dominic Shelley, prosecuting, said that more than £15,000 has already been paid back and the Newark Post Office owner is planning civil action against Houghton.

Houghton, 52, of Worthington Lane, Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir, admitted theft of £25,177 from the Royal Mail Group between March 2009 and January this year.

She was given a nine-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, with £250 prosecution costs and ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work.

Recorder Christopher Donnellan QC told her she had only been saved from immediate custody by references given by members of her local community.
