Cable praises reopened city post office

BUSINESS Secretary Vince Cable has praised a Sheffield community group for re-opening their local post office a year after it unexpectedly closed.
The 67-year-old veteran politician toured the relaunched Darnall Post Office and spoke to staff about the unique facility - the first in a UK city to be opened by a registered charity.

He said: "It's a very good project that deserves enormous credit. Most post offices that close remain closed, but the community have come together and organised themselves. They have shown spirit and enterprise."

He was given a tour by Darnall Forum manager Neil Bishop and Darnall Post Office manager Rob Russell. He saw a demonstration of the Royal Mail's 'intelligent stamp' which can be scanned by smartphones.

The old Darnall Post Office closed last year, leaving residents over a mile to walk to the nearest alternative at Attercliffe or Handsworth.

But after a £40,000 loan and a £10,000 grant from Sheffield Council, Darnall Forum re-opened the facility and it has seen a steady stream of business.

Mr Cable added: "During the last government there were two big waves of post office closures, but certainly this government has no plans and no intention of having another wave of closures."

The Twickenham MP used the visit to defend Deputy PM and Hallam MP Nick Clegg, who washeckled on a visit to the city last week with calls of 'Tory boy'.

Mr Cable said: "He's done a brilliant job and is not a 'Tory boy' but a Liberal Democrat. We have a very distinct identity within this coalition. Night and day he is working on our agenda which is about fairness in taxation.

"Every evidence I have, including in Sheffield, is that these few people that go around following him are utterly and completely unrepresentative. Nick has done a great job for this city and for the country."
