Day off refused!!!

I was under the impression that the DOM had to tell you before half the time you originally put the request in had lapsed.

IE you cannot be denied today, for Saturday, if you asked three weeks ago.

There might be an agreement between RM and CWU on that,however, I can't find it.

The law however says we have to give notice a minimum of twice the length of leave requested and employers have the length of leave requested to refuse.

IE. If we want 2 weeks leave we have to give a minimum of 4 weeks notice and if they turn it down they have to give 2 weeks notice counting back from the 1st day of the leave.

The problem is they don't want to issue days of full stop.
No one knows what is round the corner so if they commit you to a day off next month (even though the leave spread is not full)and there are sickness problems at that time it costs them.

Reps should get onto this big time,if there is space in the spread next month they should demand it's put in,they are taking the piss out of us.

last year i gave my DOM 6 months notice for a sat off, for a family wedding ,he refused it saying he could not cover ,it with out even checking if it could be covered

If you have a rep, then this should have been discussed at the weekly resourcing meetings.

A special request should be processed within 7 days and few people know that once you have submitted the form it is the duty of the manager to grant the leave (with or without pay) or more importantly if not granted they must provide alternatives holiday,etc. Ask the rep to get the process of the rm site.
Special leave without pay should have a written explanation from the manager on what his rational was in granting special leave C.

I do not work on delivery but I fully understand your dilemmas. Mail Centres are no different and though I have some leave available to me, the choices available are extremely limited. The Mail Centre Manager and the nodding dogs in suits think more about lost bonuses than the workforce these days, hence they virtually cancel leave in busy months.

Much of it is down to the shrinking workforce and general cost-cutting which goes on. The bosses are basically in it for their own ends, or to put it another way, wrapped up in their own self-centered little world.

Managers though have no problem getting time off. It highlights the gulf between staff and bosses. Personally speaking, I adopt an approach of ignoring bosses and only speak when I'm spoken to. Keeping them at arms length, or better still, two arms length is a policy adopted by quite a few of my colleagues. There is little or no point in flogging a dead horse. Easier said than done though in a delivery office environment.
