Mail delivery resumes in Calgary after aggressive hawk attacks postal worker

Postal workers in Calgary are delivering mail door to door again after an hawk repeatedly dive-bombed a letter carrier.

The Swainson’s hawk was so aggressive that it even broke a bicycle helmet that the carrier wore to protect herself. But the danger seems to have passed.

Neighbours say the hawk is still in the area, but a postal supervisor and relief letter carrier delivered the mail “with no issues at all,” said Lillian Salchner, a spokeswoman for Canada Post.

“They were looking out for each other, just in case, you never know,” Ms. Salchner said.

The harassed letter carrier has not yet returned to the route, she added.

Residents of more than 150 homes in a wealthy enclave had to pick up their mail at a local depot while they waited for the hawk to leave Calgary for its annual migration to Argentina.

Canada Post resumed delivery Tuesday at wildlife officials advised them that the troublesome hawk would have migrated by the Labour Day weekend. The attacks began back in June; the hawk seemed to be protecting two fledglings.

The hawk is still in the area, said Kathryn Chan, whose property line almost touches the tree that the bird claimed for the summer.

“We think it comes back and sleeps in the nest at night. It’s in the area, but it’s getting ready to move on,” Ms. Chan said.

“We had film crews out there on Thursday all morning. Nobody got swooped, nobody.

“It’s not that big an issue. It’s just that particular carrier that has a problem.”
