Go for it!

Go in with your eyes open, and take any advice given, then if it sounds dodgy use some common sense.

Ask questions,

Talk to your Line mangers, be friendly with them, but don't expect it in return if you need a favour

all in all enjoy the job, most of us do, but we still like to gripe about it!

Good luck, and tell us all how you get on!

A lot will depend on who mentors you. Some of the postmen are set in their ways and won't hesitate to pass on their bad habits to you. Take myself - when I was starting, I had a day out with a couple of individuals due to one having a holiday booked. Both of them BOASTED that they never took any packets back, which led to things being left in all manner of places. I would hesitate to describe this as door stepping, as they were careful to use established hiding spots, some agreed with the customer. However, this promotes a kind of competitiveness, never to have to take anything back. You may end up feeling under pressure to 'get rid' of things when you ought not to be thinking in such a way. If somebody has a secure porch or an established hiding place, I will perhaps consider leaving a packet, but generally, it's not a good thing to do. On top of that, you may find that your postie is a start early kind of person. They all were in our place and I was advised by my mentor to come in early as it made it easier to get everything done. Nobody told me my official start time so I just did it because I thought that was how the job worked. I thought I had to do all my d2ds on Monday - because everybody else did.

In all likelihood you'll learn not a lot and some of that you'll need to forget if you're to become competent.

They say hindsights a wonderful thing, but if i knew back then what i know now - no way i would have ever enlisted myself into a corrupt organisation as royal mail.

As a new starter you will be unaware of what lies in wait, ok the first week may seem fine while they lull you into a false sense of security by easing you in. Then depending what p/t contract you have - you will be expected to -

manage your contracted hrs around unmaneagable workloads,

work over your contracted hrs, then be accused of being a troublesome employee if you don't,

throw the remainder of the walk in whats been left -(if your a bag carrier)

do 4,5,6 lots of door to doors in one week,

do different duties everyweek as a reserve forcing you over your contracted hours,

hang about for a lift out or wait around for bags- again forcing you over your contracted hrs,

believe all the bullshit in worktime learning - also in the courier,

believe the mail volumes are dropping! :wave

Well done :Applause

I hope it goes well. Take your time and try not to feel stressed or overwhelmed by the fact everyone is rushing around. I hope you get a good mentor and dont be afraid to ask plenty of questions. The folks on here can help you as well so come back and ask.

Its going to be a lot of walking which you will need to adjust to so when you finish try and get plenty of rest for the next day. Look after your feet to try and prevent blisters, i found wearing 2 pair of thin cotton socks helped. :Very Happy

Good luck Buddy :cool

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

first week ... probably start u tuesday with a tour u do nothing but watch him he gives u a lift out nice n early ( frame made up perfectly for you coming in) .. " see how easy it is youll finish on time no problem and you dont need to claim overtime " you finish on time and your thinking aw this is fine. - atleast thast what they want you to think

wednesday .. he gives u wee bits to do here n there and u still finish on time ... thats ok i was probably slowing him down.

Thursday much the same

Friday on your own now ..... HO HO HO SHAFTED u start alteast 30 mins later than getting a lift up in car ur frames covered in mail and they have started putting in D2D ..... and now your back to doing it all on ur own just like tuesday right? cant be that bad

HAHAH

SHAFTARONIED

advise is... on the wed n thursday ojn the training when he asks u to do bits here and there refuse tell him your timing him ... :left: then u can make sure the walk is do able and watch the trainers face drop a beauty.

I wish i done that after not realising that me doing bits here n there for him was just hiding the fact the walk was to long !
