A MAIL bag that was stolen from a postman’s bike in Limpsfield on Monday was later found empty in the back of a van.

The Royal Mail bag was stolen after the bike had been left outside St Peter’s Church on High Street, Limpsfield, on Monday morning at 11.15am.

The passenger was seen to get out of a white Ford Transit van and take the bag before returning to the vehicle.

He is described as white, in his late teens or early 20’s, slim build and around 5ft 4ins tall. He was wearing a dark-coloured hat, possibly a beanie, and dark trousers.

A van matching the description was later stopped by police on the A25 who discovered an empty mail bag inside.

Dave Evans, investigating officer, said: "Were you in the High Street at the time of the incident? Did you see a man matching the suspect’s description carrying what could have been a mail bag towards a white van? Perhaps you remember seeing a white van parked close to the church, but did not think anything was suspicious at the time?

"If you have any information which could help our investigation, then please get in touch. Also, if anyone has seen any mail in the area which looks like it has been disregarded in bushes, bins, or anywhere unusual, then please let me know."

Anyone with information should contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference number TD/10/4097, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Happens all the time , just to save a few minutes. Other daft things i have seen are second bags left under pouch box beacause they do no fit in and keys for box left under a stone under pouch box. Probaley only tip of iceberg even leaving mail on dash, leaving engine running seems the normal rountine for some.

Happens all the while. On the TV news a couple of days ago a reporter shown with, coincidently, in the background a Royal Mail van with side door open and no postman in sight.
