Ryanair boss blasted for pilot call

Airline pilots have accused Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary of endangering the safety of passengers with a call to do away with the second pilot on the flight deck of aircraft to save money.

Mr O'Leary claims the second pilot serves no purpose and could be replaced by a stewardesses trained to land planes in an emergency.
His provocative comments were immediately dismissed by the British Airline Pilots' Association (BALPA) as "unwise and unsafe".

One senior pilot predicted that such a move would also prove to be a "recipe for business disaster."
Mr O'Leary, 49, who has headed the no-frills carrier for 17 years, made his comments in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek magazine.
"Really, you only need one pilot. Let's take out the second pilot. Let the bloody computer fly it," he told the publication.
In the event of the lone pilot suffering a heart attack a stewardess trained to land the plane would step in and save the day.
"If the pilot has an emergency, he rings the bell, he calls her in," Mr O'Leary said. "She could take over."
A BALPA spokesman said: "Are there no lengths to which he will not go to get publicity?
"His suggestion is unwise, unsafe and the public will be horrified."


I know it's nothing to do with us i just thought it was absolutely hilarious just how far these guys will go to make a buck.

That's the sum total of their incredible entrepreunerial skills, get rid of as many staff as is possible, and as long as profits are up, bugger the consequences.
You could train a Barbary Ape to do what the likes of O'Leery, Crazier, get paid £millions to do.

TBH I'd never fly with an airline that serves alcohol in a plastic bag but then as I won't fly then it doesn't matter to me........................unless one of them crashes into me

As this all about saving costs;
Stewardess - average salary say around £16,000 - £23,000
Pilot - average salary say around £60,000 - £70,000
Get rid of the second pilots, promote the stewardesses. Looks good on the balance sheet - a fair saving (no pun intended).

O'Leary's salary (in 2006) 837,000 euros
Why don't we get rid of O'Leary and promote a pilot to Chief Exec or, better still a stewardess? Now there's a bloody good saving made while getting rid of a superfluous dwarf

Was'nt Willy Walsh a pilot?
No way would I fly with Ryan Air or any of the other low cost airlines. They're not that low cost when they add all the extras anyway.
