Since its foundation in 1962 Research International has grown to become one of the world’s biggest market research companies, employing 2,500 people in 50 countries.

One of the firm’s specialities is providing tailor-made quality control surveys for blue chip clients including Toyota, Microsoft, Renault, Unilever, Samsung and Barclays.
According to Royal Mail, it provides them with “an accurate and unbiased measure of the delivery service Royal Mail provides to its customers” by using 22,000 volunteers to post test letters to each other all over the country.
The volunteers post test letters to each other and log the dates of posting and receipt via an internet site, which enables the company to build up a picture of how efficient deliveries are.
The latest annual accounts for Research International show that in the year ended 31 December 2008 its before tax profit had slumped from £1.3 million the previous year to just £22,000.
Last February it merged with another market research company, TNS, during restructuring by both firms’ parent company WPP, which is headed by the former Saatchi & Saatchi executive Sir Martin Sorrell.
Based in the More London business park, next to the London Mayor Boris Johnson’s Thames-side offices in City Hall, the company is now known as TNS Research International.
