Ethics expert slams strikers as dishonest, cowardly and unet
Ethics expert slams strikers as dishonest, cowardly and unethical http://www.journalism.co.uk/66/articles/540375.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Why in a civilised society do we allow employees to blackmail their employers and hurt innocent customers?
That's a question Dr. Bill Robb, an Aberdeen-based ethics expert says we should all be asking. Many of us have suffered over the years from people disrupting our lives and it looks like we’re in for more inconvenience as BBC, rail, airline and council employees may strike.
Strikers should question their motives and this will expose how striking is dishonest, cowardly and unethical, says Dr Robb.
Striking is in effect a refusal to work while still keeping your job. Most people strike because they are dissatisfied with their terms or conditions – they feel that their employer is not paying them what they think they are worth. Strikers claiming they have no other option is dishonest because there always is a choice – withhold your labour by resigning.
And that's where the cowardliness is exposed. Strikers are not sure other employers will value them more highly and hence pay them more. Surely, if your employer is rotten, it makes sense to find a better employer and better pay. If all workers resigned from the Royal Mail today, example, the business would begin to fail and employers would then realise the value of the workforce. Of course, the strikers know that thousands of people are just waiting to snap up those jobs – at the existing wages. Strikers are too cowardly to test their value by resigning and seeking a better job.
There are two reasons why striking is unethical. Firstly, to get what they want, strikers are willing to hurt innocent others. Strikers know their actions will make life difficult and they hope that by hurting 'customers', those innocents will put pressure on employers to give in to strikers’ demands. Secondly, strikers are blackmailing their employers. What strikers are really saying is: "Give us what we want or we will damage your business and our livelihood".
We should add another adjective to describe striking – 'stupid', because blackmailing your employer by damaging the business is doing oneself out of a job in the long term. Surely, it’s time to do away with a law that legitimises blackmail with the term 'industrial action'.
Note to editors
Dr. Robb is available for expert opinion, interviews and comments on ethical matters. He has spent 20 years researching and promoting ethics education. Dr Robb expresses ethical issues in a way people can readily understand. He has doctoral degrees from Glasgow and South Africa and is director of the Center for Alleviating Social Problems through Values Education (CAVE) and writes extensively on ethics and values education.

Re: Ethics expert slams strikers as dishonest, cowardly and
His claims should be met with extreme scepticism.
Dr Bill Robb
Bill is a management and education consultant based in Aberdeen, Scotland. His specialism is getting individuals, teams and departments to improve performance through greater co-operation, even in trying conditions. His practice is based on the principle of treating all people with respect. Much of his work with managers is "values education" - showing them how valuing others improves performance.
Bill started CAVE in June 1993 because he enjoyed contact with colleagues in values education and because he sees values education as the most effective way of alleviating social problems.
Born in Glasgow in 1952, Bill emigrated to Southern Rhodesia (as it was then - now Zimbabwe) with his parents in 1957. He completed a BSc in Agricultural Economics (University of Rhodesia) and after teaching Economics at the University of Cape Town for four years completed a Diploma in Education (1984) and an MEd (1989). It was at this stage that Bill became aware of education as an ethical activity.
His MEd thesis on the journalist as educator clearly showed the relationship between education and ethics. On returning to Scotland, Bill worked for the Department of Adult and Continuing Education in the University of Glasgow. His PhD involved devising and studying ways of helping students to effectively interpret essay-type examination questions.
For almost three years Bill was Chief Executive of the Gordon Cook Foundation, an Aberdeen based charity which funds research and development in Values Education. Bill was Chairman of the National Association of Values in Education and Training and continues his research and publishing in values education.
Bill recognised the need for a Journal of Values Education and published the first volume in January 1999. He was awarded his DEd degree from the University of South Africa in May 1997 for this work on "Adulthood as an ethical continuum".
Management consultant and right-wing nutter.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Ethics expert slams strikers as dishonest, cowardly and
All that education and the man can't even get his head around simple economics.
All that a mass resignation would test would be the economics of the job market at this precise moment.
Otherwise just how desperate people were to work which at the moment is....very.
Unfortunately his theory starts coming apart when employment increases and people don't feel the need to work for peanuts any more...and strike for more pay or move on creating a business with a workforce that is constantly churning over staff or suffering from industrial action.
Stick to "thinking" for a living "Dr"
