It was with surprise that trustees of Chantry YMCA read the article, UK first as charity reopens axed Post office branch (Aug 26), stating that a charity in Sheffield was the first in the UK to reopen a closed Post Office branch.
This is a gross inaccuracy. Chantry YMCA was in fact the first charity nationally to open a previously closed Post Office branch. It did so more than a year ago and the Sheffield charity making the false claim knows this to be the case as Chantry YMCA has assisted them.
It was Chantry YMCA Post Office staff who provided their staff with the live counter training, in our post office, to enable them to prepare to open their post office.
The first post office to be reopened nationally by a charity is in Kimberworth Park and it is located together with a charity shop. This model forms part of Chantry YMCA's social enterprise portfolio which seeks to create opportunities to help young people to achieve their potential.
I have written to the charity in Sheffield and its trading company asking them to reconsider the accuracy of their press release.
David Sargent, CEO, Chantry YMCA, Chantry, Brunswick Road, Rotherham
