Last day for robbed and sacked Carrigans postmistress

A rural postmistress sacked for not following security procedures during an armed robbery will work her last day on Tuesday.

Bernie Moore has run the post office in Carrigans in County Donegal for 30 years.

In February 2009, three armed raiders held up the post office and got away with 80,000 euros from the safe.

As well as having her contract terminated, Ms Moore had been told that she must pay back the money taken.

The Irish postal service has since withdrawn its request for the repayment of the stolen funds.

However, Mrs Moore has been told that she will not be entitled to a pension or any form of severance pay.

She said her life had been a "total and utter nightmare" since the robbery.

Speaking about her treatment by An Post after 30 years of service she said: "I feel hurt. It hurts more than anything."

In a statement An Post said: "Security procedures were not followed and that cannot be allowed. We have withdrawn the demand for the money but the operators contract is being terminated. We canot say any more at this stage".

Her husband, who was also made redundant a year and a half ago, will be there to provide support for his wife as she sees out her last day.

Two of her three daughters will also be there to help out. Mrs Moore said she sent the youngest to school because she did not want her to see her mother closing up for the last time.

A new postmaster is due to take over the running of the Carrigans branch on Monday 6 August.

Mrs Moore said she did not know what her family would do with both her and her husband out of work.

"At the minute I'll just have to pray hard and look for a job and that's it."

Now do we see a pattern forming here?
Although this incident happen in Eire, where clearly Post Office managers went to the same school for robocop heartless managers as UK Post Office mangers went to, a mention in the Press gets you let off from being held liable for loss of PO funds following a robbery. We had a similar story from Wales very recently.

So how can this stance be justified, where the Post Office can pick and choose who they let off depending on the level of Press interest?
