The Lino's make damn sure that anyone stood around kicking their heels "jumps on the missorts". 95% of the time the people who jump on to help are other full timers, mainly because the part timers would take 5 times as long to do the same task. Most full time staff know which walk each road is on, part timers generally don't. Part timers don't get asked/linger in the background because they would be more hinderance than help. It might work in a small office with 15-20 walks, but in an office like mine with over 100 walks there's not enough time in the part timer's contracted hours for them to "learn the frames".
Someone posted something about where does it say a PT must do this or that - well one thing is for sure it certainly doesn't say sit on your arsch and watch somebody else working.

I think he is refering to the list displayed above your head in the IPS which tells you what walk does what street.Terry Butcher wrote:

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I always thought they were named OPALS by the same fruit who dreamed up Starburst.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Part timers helping to sort missorts
Our OPALS used to have the street - walk name, now its street - walk number, so on top of learning where the walks are on the primary you have to know the walk number too and its not as if theyre in numerical order from top left to bottom right either. Makes for a long laborious process i can tell you. When we used to do row 15 its was a piece of p*ss after an hour or so. And yes i stand in front of it with a load of missorts from my frame only for a fulltimer to take them off me and do them in seconds.

Re: Part timers helping to sort missorts
So,,idiots are people who havnt been trained according to that DOM,,Train people to know what is going on and stop sniggering at "idiots" is the answer although that would take some basic management skills. People who like the status quo and talk in endless TLAs to mystify the straightforward are the idiots,,,all IMHOPOSTMAN wrote:We call it that.krussel wrote:Our dom calls it the idiot board![]()

Re: Part timers helping to sort missorts
When I first started on IPS, I asked if I could take an OPAL home so I could practice sorting in my own time, so I could get up to speed quicker.dvbuk55 wrote:

I also made a tape of which street was on which round so I could listen to it in my sleep. That is a proven method of speed learning.
I'm surprised more people don't think like that.
