They already have the responsibility that's why they are the Postmaster. If you have written instructions allowing you to do this, you MAY be ok, if you don't and the IB do a check expect your P45 and maybe even lights out at 8pm. <clang>

Destroying unaddressed mail is now seen as just as bad as destroying addressed mail.

Because the sub postmaster doesn't want the hassle they've told us to take home any excess d2d's and bin them as they don't want the resposibility!
 Is that right?

Don't....not under ANY circumstances even with written permission.
If the sub postmaster doesn't want the hassle....let him take them home.

Yes it is what they asked us to do. Although thankfully for myself as I only cover the day off, and don't actually have a weekly duty, I allow the person who's round it is to take them home if they so wish. I have already voiced my opinion in the office that it is surely far more suspicious if we take them home and bin any excess. Surely it's open to abuse?
Anyway, if you wanted to get rid, the best thing to do would be to burn them, right? You never heard me say that though.

Oops! Never saw that story. Still though, let me get one thing straight- I don't condone the destroying/ witholding or delay of any post be it d2d or otherwise. After all, someone, somewhere has payed for it to be delivered. Having said that.... if someone were to only dispose of the d2d's and kept on delivering the standard mail and packets, just how long before anyone realised? I can't really see a scenario where the average person on the round is going to be phoning up the complaints dept. asking them why they haven't recieved any junk mail that week.
Of course this wouldn't really be an issue if posties felt properly compensated for doing d2d's. It really is a sorry state of affairs when these items are supposedly carrying the business. Especially when nearly every week the client listed on the bundles is TNT.

You might not know who lives in your delivery area. There could be someone that works for a Direct Mailing company or one of their clients and they may be expecting to see a particular leaflet dropping through their letterbox.

As you rightly say Royal Mail are paid to deliver them and, as their employees, it is part of our job. Damned if I'm going to risk losing my job over a few poxy leaflets.

As I said, yes it's true, although I personally have refused. As for the rep, well lets just say we haven't seen or heard from a rep in over 2 years now. He refused to come back to our office (which only has a total of 10 staff, or at least it would have if 3 weren't permanently off on long-term sick) during the 07 IA when half of the office came in to work. I hasten to add I wasn't one of them, but now he refuses to have anything to do with anyone in our office. I needed help a few times with things and got no joy, so in the end I came out of the Union.
