Tony McCarthy - Group Director, People & Organisational Development

Image

Tony McCarthy joined Royal Mail Group in January 2003 and is responsible for ensuring that the company's frontline people
and their managers get all possible support to carry out their roles.

Tony's main challenge is boosting the morale of Royal Mail Group's almost 193,000 employees and making the company a great place to work.

Before joining Royal Mail, Tony was Group HR Director at BAE Systems plc, where he had worked since 1978. Tony has a
postgraduate diploma in Manpower Studies from Salford University and a degree in Business Studies from Sheffield
Polytechnic.

Do you reckon he's been sacked or summin and they just haven't take him of their website.

Well, I mean: the Courier, which we all get sent through the post is very positive: perhaps he has something to do with that.

Adam Crozier took over. He stopped job & go, encouraged meal reliefs & doing the job properly. Posties are now starting to work at a normal rate, have a meal relief & get OT. :cfo The new hero of the posties :left:

..the thing is, I've heard it said (paraphrasing, of course) - even in RMC - that for new starters (who don't have any baggage), there seems to be less wrong with the company than to people who've worked in it since the times of Queen Victoria. It seems they're talking about the mechanics of how the organisation works, vis-a-vis communication and "personality politics".

To someone new, like myself, it all seems rather strange and weird: everyone at each others' throats; a legacy of arcane practices and a militant workforce and a changing work base and ethos. It all seems like a perfect case of evolutionary socialism in action; one which Darwin himself would be sure to appreciate...

All very, very strange and bizarre to a relative outsider looking in... which has caused similar distraction to several of my new colleagues who have started earlier (more recently) in the job than me.

Having said that, I still like the job and the people I work with. Also, I'm an OPG and yes I am supposed to be PART-TIME! :Very Happy

And as I heard (again, as a little nugget of information) recently, quoted (I paraphrase here) from a manager saying to a postman (advisingly), "Whatever anyone says, at the end of the day, you're only delivering letters".

Perhaps Tony could look into developing a training and reference resource for new intakes, which describes in-depth the processes and procedures that we go through, from entering the organisation to leaving it. Something which would assist the workplace coaches in doing their jobs: that would make RM a greater place to work.
