A postman from Norfolk who stole money from birthday cards to feed a gambling addiction has been jailed for two years.

Daniel Kerling, 35, from Thetford, admitted the thefts, which happened between July 2006 and April 2010.

He also pleaded guilty to delaying more than 8,600 items of post, opening 207.

At Norwich Crown Court, Recorder David Gordon QC told Kerling: "This strikes at the very heart of the country's communication system."

'Compulsive gambler'

Duncan O'Donnell, prosecuting, said that when Kerling came under suspicion the Post Office put two packages through the postal system which were later found in his rucksack.

Mr O'Donnell said most of the packages Kerling had opened were birthday cards with money in them.

When arrested Kerling, of Canon's Close, said: "If I was not a compulsive gambler this would not have happened."

He said he had taken more than £1,000 in cash from the post.

He added: "It is shameful what I have done to the public."

Malcolm Plummer, representing Kerling, said: "It was easy to do and he just went on, but he shows considerable remorse."

He shows considerable remorse

I bet he does.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

A thieving scumbag from Norfolk who stole money from birthday cards to feed an addiction to being a thieving scumbag has been jailed for too little time.

Daniel Kerling, 35, from Thetford, admitted the thefts, which happened between July 2006 and April 2010.

He also pleaded guilty to delaying more than 8,600 items of post, opening 207 and sniffing the saddles of bicycles parked in schoolyards.

At Norwich Crown Court, Recorder David Gordon QC told Kerling: "This strikes at the very heart of the country's communication system."

'Deceitful P.O.S.'

Duncan O'Donnell, prosecuting, said that when Kerling came under suspicion the Post Office put two packages through the postal system which were later found in a York along with several hundred other undelivered packets hidden in a locked office at the DO.

Mr O'Donnell said most of the packages Kerling had opened were birthday cards with money in them as he thought stealing from children had a classy ring to it.

When arrested Kerling, of Canon's Close, said: "If I was not a complete waste of space, carbon and oxygen this would not have happened."

He said he had taken more than £1,000 in cash from the post.

He added: "It is shameful what I have done to the public and to all the hard working honest posties nationwide."

Malcolm Plummer, representing Kerling, said: "It was easy to do and he just went on, but he shows considerable remorse now that he is in daily danger of some big hairy con wanting to love him roughly up the Gary Glitter."

Really? :hmmmm

And there was me. Thinking that if he wasn't a dishonest, dishonerable, thieving, [I can't post the rest of this statement as it'd be in breach of the rules.]. He wouldn't have stolen from the Mail. Being a compulsive gambler, is just another character flaw, to add to the list. :evil/mad :Sick :no no :evil/mad :Sick

It's people like that, who tarnish our good name. :evil/mad
