A MOTORIST had a narrow escape after teenage thugs fire at his vehicle with an air gun.

The pellet missed him by inches and hit a bottle next to him after going through his windscreen as he drove near Tiverton.

PC Alan Findlay said the man was in a Royal Mail van travelling westwards on the A361 when the vehicle was shot at.

The driver noticed a couple of young teenagers on a bridge two miles before the Bolham Road roundabout at about 1pm on Tuesday of last week.

He told police that he believes the youths had an air rifle.

Police, who say the incident could have resulted in serious injury and endangered other road users, are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have seen two young people near any of the bridges, possibly with an air rifle, at the time.

PC Findlay said: “This is a very rare occurrence.

“However, the consequences of such actions are clear for all to see.

“Firing or throwing any item from a bridge into moving traffic is a serious offence and it was pure luck that no one was injured.”

Anyone with any information relating to the incident should contact police on 08452-777444 or visit their local station quoting crime number KT/10/1423.
