After a lifetime in the motoring industry, Graham Ames vowed his next venture would not be middle-of-the-road.

He had spotted a gap in the market, but it took him seven years of dedicated laboratory work on a new polymer before he was ready to launch his ground-breaking tyre sealant PunctureSafe.

Now his work has been rewarded with an exclusive contract to supply puncture prevention for Royal Mail's 32,000-vehicle fleet.

"We're growing at a phenomenal rate at the moment," Graham says. "We can't meet the demand from the domestic and trade sectors, so we have decided to recruit a franchise network to ease the pressure."

The company's success is built on Graham's sealant.

"I knew it had to work to a very high degree and, because of impending legislation in Europe, it had to be non-toxic and not contain the lethal ethylene glycol commonly found in existing tyre sealants," he explains.

"It also had to defy all the rules of physics." In short, to be effective the sealant had to cover the whole of the inside of the tyre rather than being driven to the centre as normally happens.

Its success can be measured in repeat orders, which is helping to encourage franchisees to sign up for their exclusive postcode regions at a rate of six a month.

Investing in Puncturesafe takes an initial £3,500 to buy the territorial rights, but anyone thinking of setting up as a distributor will need extra cash to cover the normal setting-up costs of a business.

However, there's no need to buy expensive premises as the key is to go out and sell the treatment, Graham says.

With nothing else like it on the market, franchisees are often finding it an easy sell.

There must be any number of rubber goods this would be suitable for like cycle tyres, wheelbarrow tyres, rubber sheep, just as an example

Serious note: The problem in my office with tyres is them wearing out, not punctures so I can see what major benefit it'll be................another example of RM pissing away money on useless things

Well again on a serious note, do you apply it after the puncture, or before the puncture and how good a product is it in terms of being idiot proof. If it happens on site does re-inflate it?
