A 36-year-old Shropshire postal worker burned a bin liner full of mail and failed to deliver thousands of items after failing to cope with his job, a court heard today.

Brendan Kinsella, of Swains Meadow, Church Stretton, failed to deliver nearly 5,000 items of post between June 2009 and March this year, Telford Magistrates Court heard.

He admitted delaying postage of 3,634 addressed packets and 828 advertising mailshots. He also admitted opening 21 items including greetings cards, damaging a quantity of mail by fire and destroying 327 postal packages.

Mr Stephen Scully, prosecuting, said there had been 29 complaints between June 2009 and February this year regarding Kinsella’s delivery route in Church Stretton.

Mr Scully said one person had requested a death certificate that failed to arrive six times.

He said: “On March 12 Royal Mail investigators approached Mr Kinsella and he consented to a search.”

The court heard mail was found in the hallway, lounge, conservatory, and bedroom and a number of other places at Kinsella’s house.

Mr Scully added: “He admitted he had burnt a black bin liner of mail and probably a couple of carrier bags.”

Mr Steven Meredith, for Kinsella, said his client was remorseful and fully admitted what he had done.

He said: “The stress was building up. Initially he was doing his best. It got on top of him.”

The court heard there had been staffing issues at Royal Mail and Kinsella said he had to work overtime, which was not always paid.

Magistrates said they were leaving all options open and the case was adjourned for reports before sentence is passed.

I wonder how many future new starters, with previously unblemished characters, will fall into the trap Royal Mail's lazy, overpaid, senior executives, have set for them?
Because, in making what was once a straight-forward job, into one where even the most experienced posties don't know whether they are coming or going 99% of the time, I'd wager stories like the above will increase alarmingly.
I don't blame people like Brendan Kinsella, I blame lazy, workshy, dollops of uselessness like Mark Higson, a waste of space who gets £1.7million a year for a few hours of sitting on his fat arse talking shyte, for a few days a week, and who has been instrumental in Royal Mail's recent spiraling decline from being a model the rest of the world envied, to what it is now, and what it will be shortly.

Although we will all have some sympathy with Brendan I don't think "failing to cope with his job" can be seen as a valid excuse for opening, damaging, destroying or delaying a large quantity of mail.

Agree with this sentiment--however bad a despairing this job is, and it is, repeated offences opening mail etc is not on. Folks do have an alternative---

A former postman has admitted destroying thousands of letters and parcels at his home in Shropshire.

Brendan Kinsella told investigators he had been overwhelmed by work and took the post home intending to deliver it later, Telford magistrates heard.

The 36-year-old from Swains Meadow in Church Stretton admitted a charge of arson on Monday.

He was given a six-month sentence, suspended for two years.
'Opened post'

Investigators found around 5,000 letters and parcels either torn up, burned or stashed in bin bags in his home and garden, dating from a nine-month period leading up to March this year.

The court heard that he opened some post but he did not take any money.

He resigned from the Royal Mail in March.

Magistrates also ordered him to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work.
