ROMFORD Post Office has officially opened in WH Smith, despite a petition signed by more than 5,000 people against the controversial plans.

It opened its doors on Thursday last week for the first time in its new home on the first floor of the store in the Liberty Shopping Centre.

Eamonn Mahon, who launched the petition in April, said: "I am so outraged that they have steamrollered ahead with the plans without any thought for those who have signed the petition."

Mr Mahon launched the petition to try to prevent the Post Office moving from a newsagents in South Street.

It was presented at the last full council meeting for consideration by Post Office bosses, but residents argue that the organisation has just gone ahead with its plans without informing them.

Mr Mahon said: "All our hard work has just been chucked down the drain because they haven't taken in anything we have said and have just done what they wanted.

"We were not even told it was going ahead and they did not respond to the petition."

There had been concerns about the Post Office being on the first floor of the store. It has two lifts and an escalator, but residents argue that if the lifts break it could leave elderly people and those with babies climbing the stairs.

Harold Hill Cllr Denis O'Flynn said: "I feel that its a violation of people's rights of expression because people from all across Havering signed the petition and they have just ignored it.

"But it now means that people are going to have to try to squeeze in the store and people with pushchairs are going to find it hard getting in."

A Post Office spokesman said: "During the consultation period customers were asked to raise any concerns they had over the proposed service provision at the new branch.

"A number of representations were received including a petition and meetings held with local representatives.

"All concerns were taken into account before the plans were finalised.

I'm surprised the public can still be outraged by this sort of thing ,its time they woke up and smelt the gravy oops I mean coffee.What is worse is constituency MPs and councillors genuinely seem to be fooled by this time after time.Really we are the most supplicant of peoples these days ,I blame spin Blair Mandleson amd all those other shoddy specimens that inhabited the corridors of power under the name of Labour.I do not wish them well.
