Ideally you will be better off if both the paired team can drive as they can share the packets if one gets back before the other during the bursts. They both have a key btw.
On the issue of using your own car to meet up, this is a total no no in our office."NO using own car period". Usually people can make it work pretty well. Sometimes when you've finished you could pouch off and drop your partner off then take the van home.

Problem we realy have with van share is the packets and number of. Because we have a right **** of an area manager our rounds are by far too long. Therefore we have people working their contractual hours every day. This is a big problem because you have rounds that have little mail and not many packets, then you get the opposite with others.
People who deliver close to the office use a bike still. To me this is wrong for many reasons. For one, they don't do packets thus no extra workload. Also people are having to use their own driving licence and imo should get paid extra for this extra responsibility.
Well of course some still DO get paid for driving - but there will be far more needing to drive now so where does that leave the two tiered pay structure theory - Postmen A gets paid for driving Postman B doesn't ....................... no doubt there will be a perfectly adequate excuse for it.

if everyone who has a licence refused to drive ,would that no be an end to van sharing.

Or at least everyone who wont be getting paid the driving allowance, should refuse

Maybe that way they would be forced to pay it???

I would be a little bit dubious about refusing to drive until there is a hard and fast rule because somewhere in the agreement it states BOTH sides will not tolerate any delay or implementation of the agreement - or words to that effect, which could be construed as no protection from the union if you slow things down by not agreeing to drive - the argument would be that it is weight off the shoulder - but lets for argument say you have 9 points on your licence and don't wish to take the chance of another speeding ticket, 3 more points and a ban - Royal Mail are most unsympathetic to their drivers so the fine and points and ban are yours.

So What About My Situation? (ie I have a private life away from royal mail)

I am away from home (staying with my partner) living 25 miles from office where i work, been told i would not be allowed to take a CDV that distance home...so where does that leave me...i could not be a driver then, after all i could not take the vehicle home even if i wanted to (which i don't)....

How do you get home now? You could still be chosen to drive, do the delivery and park the vehicle at the yard and make your way home as usual....I don't see how that would preclude you from sharing driving duties tbh.

Yes, two drivers to each van, the other one takes it home, you don't and continue to use your own vehicle for the daily 50 mile round trip. :nana :nana
