Investigation after mail fails to reach hundreds of Grimsby

ROYAL Mail is investigating the delay of post to hundreds of homes in the Grimsby area.

Households in the DN34 postcode area have been affected, according to a Royal Mail spokesperson.

It is understood an employee has resigned.

The DN34 area covers Yarborough Road and other streets leading off it.

However, other Grimsby residents, from the Willows Estate and Laceby Acres, have been in touch with the Grimsby Telegraph to say they have also been affected.

Nikki Bell, of Byland Grove on the Willows, said she has only recently received letters which were meant to arrive as long ago as March 6.

She said: "We are now getting water bills, electric bills and council tax issues coming through.

"We have been wondering why we have had no bank statements because we have not had one for two months, but we assumed everything was being paid.

"Now we have people asking us for payment, but it clearly isn't our fault."

Mrs Bell has only just received bills which are dated March 6, June 15, June 16, June 25, July 9 and July 16.

The Royal Mail has sent a circular to homes affected, which reads: "I am sorry the enclosed mail has been found after allegedly being held from delivery by a Royal Mail employee."

A Laceby Acres man, who did not wish to be named, claimed his daughter could have missed out on a place at college because of the withholding of application letters.

He said: "We have been waiting for college applications to come through the post and have only just received them.

"They were meant to come weeks ago. I just hope it doesn't mean she misses out on her preferred course."

A spokesperson for the Royal Mail said: "An investigation is under way after a quantity of undelivered mail for the DN34 postcode area was discovered.

"A member of staff has since resigned.

"We apologise to customers affected for any inconvenience.

"Anyone with concerns about their mail delivery service should call Royal Mail Customer Services on 08457 740740."

They're quick enough to get on your back when your hair's out of place or your d2ds aren't done, but thank god it only takes them months to realise the mail isn't going out. Reassuring.

I suspect if you just didn't bother with a half now and again they'd never find out. Not that any of us would do that seeing as we are all postmen of integrity, it just concerns me a little that there seems to be no detection of cases such as this until a (long) way down the line. No matter how highly or otherwise we may think of the job, we are all placed in positions of trust. We all make mistakes with misdelivery and what have you, and certain elements of what we do irritate the hell out of people, but nevertheless the majority of us try our best and would never allow mail to be delayed by more than a day.

A long time ago, yes, the 2p and 26p stamps on the envelopes suggests 1998-99.
Some interesting local history history photos on there though.
Perhaps every delivery office should have its own web site like that.
