Then you are perfectly within your rights to refuse to do it and no amount of management bull will change that.MentalVortex wrote:No. My lapsing regularly takes me over my hours - not by much, but still over my contracted hours.

Re: Lapsing & Flexibility
There was also a thing in our DO a while back where some people decided that they would cut-off on their time. That resulted in the odd bundle being brought back here and there. I never did that, never have done. But those that did were targeted by the then-DOM and a couple of the managers, who went out of their way to try to get them on the least little thing. That surely amounts to bullying people into doing overtime? Doesn't happen now, but I'd say if people started bringing mail back it would kick off again.
There's one guy in our DO whose delivery takes him an hour or more over his time. He never claims his extra hours any more because he was pulled about it in the past and is frightened in case he does again. He's effectively giving RM between five and seven hours a week for free. Insane!

If you think its insane why didn't you and your colleagues back him up or call the higher up reps in. Yes managers will target people, I have been subjected to it in the past, but when an office sticks together and plays by the rules Managers are impotent.MentalVortex wrote: There's one guy in our DO whose delivery takes him an hour or more over his time. The reason managers pressurize people is because it works and like any normal person they will take the path of least resistance, put up resistance if you think something is truly wrong and things WILL change.

Re: Lapsing & Flexibility
There's no way you'd get support for it in our DO, simple as that. I couldn't believe it when he told me & I told him to make sure and claim his hours and/or go to the union. He doesn't want to. Yes, I think it's insane, but I'm not going on some crusade for some guy who doesn't want the hassle.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:If you think its insane why didn't you and your colleagues back him up or call the higher up reps in. Fair Does - it is difficult to make a stand and then look over your shoulder and everyone else is hiding behind the bushes or has their heads stuck in the sand. Thing is the CWU don't seem to think places like this exist.MentalVortex wrote:There's no way you'd get support for it in our DO, simple as that. Re: Lapsing & Flexibility
Thanks for all the replies and help!!
Its not easy to fight your corner, when we dont know where we stand on issues like lapsing!! We have no union rep on the office floor, so theres no-one to tell us if the managers are telling us the real story (as if!!
)
A lot of our posties dont want to slug it out toe to toe with the line manager, so, to avoid arguments and arm twisting, they take their lapsing, even though they know it'll take them past their finish time!!

Today in our office the made staff lapse and told them they had work overtime to complete the delivery. Even if they wanted to work over or not.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Then your office as a whole needs to: 1) Know your rights, and 2) Grow some balls and tell them to f*ck right off.steven100 wrote:Today in our office the made staff lapse and told them they had work overtime to complete the delivery. Even if they wanted to work over or not.
It's no wonder we keep hearing about 5 hour walks is it when people just take out anything they're given.

Re: Lapsing & Flexibility
In summary, the whole shift pattern and associated hours for all these diffrent contracts is a farse...
We have full and part timers on walks that cannot be fulfilled inside contract hours and so they regularly cut-off.
We have full and part timers on walks that need to go over to complete and are happy to do so.
We have full and part timers on walks that depsite extra "summer" lapsing bundles, still finish upto 90 minutes before their contract time, return to the depot to debrief... But then managers let them walk out the door early.
Not to mention issues that disort how long a contract is needed for a given walk due to things like...
Employees who start work before their authorised start time (ideally written, but possibly verbal) and are acting like volunteers, working for free.
Employees that do not use their FREE meal relief time on a daily basis. If breaks were unpaid (like in many companies) then I could see the point, but Royal Mail is paying you to take at least 20 minutes breather.
Employees who for their own personal reasons decide to use their own petrol to deliver using their own car, possibly without correct insurance and authorisation of their manager, distorting how long that walk will take for future posties assigned to that walk (they will/ought to be targeted for lapsing in the managers eyes if they know the walk is completed early).
Employees doing themselves no favours long term by overloading their pouches, especially the first pouch, as their way of combatting any delay in their bag drop being ready at their convienience.
Employees who finish their walk after their contract time, but then do not claim for it, when they have not been delayed by perhaps meeting an old aquaintance and therefore technically having excess "meal relief" (I regularly bump into ex- work colleagues and take time off my overtime claim if I've used more than my day's allowance of meal relief, so that my lino can trust me explicitally when I do go over, which is often at least four shifts a week).
Employees that go home without having dealt with their "deads" (I now always do them on a daily basis, as it is part of the expected daily tasks for a frame holder, not doing them distorts the time needed to do everything for that walk).
Employees that come back from their walk and then do indoor tasks like "deads" or advance D2D prep for the following day that take them past their contract time, but then do not claim overtime for it.
There's no doubt plenty of other stuff that could be added to each list above, but in essence it shows that some posties are not helping themselves or their colleagues (both current and future ones) get a "fair deal."

Re: Lapsing & Flexibility
Any chance you could PM me this Broxi? my office is getting hit with this just now and we had the 30 mins taken off us today. I though you had to have finished early before they could take the half hour backBroxi51 wrote:knockoffnigel wrote:Very heavy day today, If i'd taken all my lapsing, i would have been way over time. Informed my lino that i would only be able to take half of my lapsing, and he went rattling on about "flexibility" .....if i'm over one day, thats fine as another day i might be early and make the time back,he said its in the agreement, and i should go and read it!!
So, my question is..... is this in the agreement, and if it is, does it cover OT caused by lapsing or only OT incurred on your own walk???
I thought lapsing was something we did when time allowed?? Am i wrong?????
Have PM you with a letter we used in our office regarding flexibility. It stopped that dead in it's tracks. Please feel free to use but take our DO name outif you do.
Union rep is useless so no point asking him
