This summers traffic has fallen more than anyone had thought.
It has dingo,i have to agree and it has sent some levels of management into panic mode.
These are dangerous times because panic mode doesn't make good decisions.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

How true. They look like they are going to cry sometimes!!!! I think their bonuses are under threat! Also the line manager that covers the DOM does not get paid for it anymore....

Good point a proper SWW would tackle declining manual sorting levels and would be better than extra outside work given the extremes of the british weather.

Belial we do have a 35 hour working week , in France they do not have paid meal reliefs and simply have a 35 hour week. In Royal Mail we have less than 35 hours working time in processing and depending on your attendance patterns and whether you are on either 39 hours or 40 hours very close to 35 hours. Remember if you are on a 5 day week you will have 5 x40 mins paid meal reliefs , if you are on a 10 hour day a 4 day day week you will have 4 x 50 mins paid meal relief.

So in Royal Mail we have some of the shortist working hours of any employers according to Labour resarch as compainies do not include paid meal reliefs.

Now in terms of retiring at 60 well that is an issue which is a political one , but in my experience the majority of members want to stay on past 60. Remember prior to MTSF you had to apply to stay on and I have reprsented indivduals at ET where Royal Mail have in the past denied indivduals the ability to stay on.

BelIal in processing once you have introduced your 39 hour week will be working less than 35 hours as under RRP mail centre staff quailfy for an additional relaxation break . In fact in several mail centres their is still a time bonus break.

Most industries abroad only have net working weeks as they do not have paid meal reliefs.

In deliveries , when they have their walk sequencing revison will have a total working week of 36 hours 20 mins as those on a 5 day attendance already have 5 x 40 mins meal relief. Those on a 4 day week will have 4 x 50 mins meal relief and will work 36 hours and 30 mins. Of course some people do make time out of the job so have a total working week of less than 35 hours.

Now in terms of getting a shorter working week of 35 hours gross well that would mean we would have to have a total working week of 32 hours and 20 mins now tell me any other industry in the UK which has full time staff on those hours ? You will not find any.

Now I have campaigned for a shorter working week for about 20 years in fact in 1994 we help support the rejection of bonus scheme at a special conference in the winter gardens at Bounemouth until we got a 35 hour working week. Well since that time we have had 90 mins off the working week under the way forward and then we have a further 60 mins once you have walk sequencing.

Now for every 90 mins off the working week it is equivlant to 2.5 % on the pay bill as the hourly rate goes up for part timers and Royal Mail have to bear the cost of going to the new hours either in a reduction in total savings or in real terms.

The union made a choice in the early 2000s that we should concentrate on increasing basic pay and most postman and women who have been in the job over a longer period then 10 years will agree that basic pay has improved. Now in my view we have to target reductiuons in the working week as priority over and above basic pay rises if we want to sustain jobs in the future.

So bielial as much as some of the comments on this sight could drive me to drink i normally refrain to when i would like to have a drink and on those occassions i dont even think about this board.

:chuckle Kin ell Dingo you really have been sucked right in. Time to think a bit more laterally ,stop accepting the choices you are offered and be a bit more creative in your exploration of the possibilities .
Once you let the opposition define the rules of the game you will never, ever come out on top.
I don't care if no other industry in this country has a shorter working week ,they do abroad ,and what is wrong with the CWU leading the way and seizing the mantle of the UK's most progressive union and leading the way? I'd call it progress and a positive development.
As for RM "bearing the costs" ,even on their own terms a reduction in working hours would leave both costs and revenue static. So why do we agree to one way benefits ? Why do the workforce have to work more to increase profits year on year for proportionately less reward ?
