My DOM mentioned it last week.

So returning to my original question, has your workplace been made aware of the role of environment champion?
No, I think will be more concerned about their wages, their jobs future, absorption, bullying, the length of their round and weight of mail of their round, whether their rounds will be turning into hybreds or part time,if on fixed term contracts whether they will have a job for much longer, etc etc etc than whether they can help Royal Mail save money by switching the lights off or turning the heating down.

No, there's been no mention of it at my site. Although, we've been using motion sensors for the lights, etc.. For quite some time. So we don't have to worry about wasting electric on things like that.

But what about the big TVs with the messages on them?
What's wrong with a noticeboard? :hmmmm
So much for being Green, eh? :arrrghhh

No. This sort of thing should be monitored by the CWU, and/or an independant body. Otherwise, it's just a publicity stunt, of no real World importance.

Personally I will be concerned about everything going on in RM including the non ops issues.

Now a quick one for dvbuk 55

You misunderstand my my comment about wasting money whilst were asked to absorb and have cut backs, its all about morality and fairness. RM should get their own house in order before coming to us and asking for more work per OPG to be done. Im not saying it will stop absorption, as that has taken on a almost idelogical status for managers.

I have no doubt that you, and others like you, will take everything into account. But what happens to the figures you generate? :hmmmm
RM will no doubt be the ones to collate the figures, and what (if any) guarantee is there, that this will be done honestly, and without spin? :hmmmm

I still think, that for this to have any credibility at all. It should be done entirely, either by the CWU, or an independant body. RM have already proved that they rely on spin, to get their Green credentials. Why should any of us believe that, that'd change now?

Isn't this the perfect task for the CWU Environmental Reps? :hmmmm
At least we could have faith in the results that way.

 And, I strongly suspect that if they achieve certain savings regarding 'cut backs on energy etc, there will be an 'incentive£££££) somewhere.

I would like to see savings ringfenced to be used for investment in RMG staff, that could be the pension fund, terms and conditions of employment for CWU mbrs, decent uniform. Another option is investment in less polluting methods of running OMV's.

Andy

We need HQ to hurry and get sorted with green reps, they could start by making branches aware of free materials from the TUC such as the go green at work handbook and Greener Deals: Negotiating on Environmental Issues at Work PDF 31 page document.

H and S reps or IR reps could then raise issues with management as part of their normal TU duty time.

If there is dedicated green reps Im sure RML can find 30 mins a week for them to have discussions with their managers?

Thats action that could be taken at no cost to the CWU.

Yes, you're right there. It'd be a great way to sort out any issues locally. But the big problem here IMHO, is the monitoring of RM's Environmental impact Nationally. I simply don't trust RM to use accurate figures. Even though I know that there will be no shortage of people like you, who'll do the job properly. It's what happens to the figures, once they get passed on, that worries me.

I see your point about it being too expensive for the CWU to do the whole thing. But surely, RM could bring in an independant body, to monitor their Environmental impact. Although, we'd need the CWU to put pressure on them to do so. They're hardly likley to volunteer to have their spin shown up for what it is. :hmmmm

The TUC and its affilates could allways campaign for such a thing, give the GS something to do.

To be honest Big D Co2 emissions are the least of our worries , sold a pup ,blindsided, hoodwinked. Take a look at PCB's, Furans;dioxins;strontium;chlorine etc. or any of the things that don't go away, don't break down, but do poison our babies DNA. Not much point in a nice climate if you've got three heads a 54ft colon and no arse hole :nervous

More to all this than CO2 emissions. The beauty is dosent have to be your worry, all you need is one person on site trying to make sure their individual workplace is doing everything possible to be sustainable and keep CO2 emissions as low as possible.

Also, unless people do what they can. These things are just going to get worse. :hmmmm As far as I'm aware (and I could be wrong), the only polution that RM produces in significant amounts, are: C02 and rubbish. Now the rubbish is already supposed to be recycled, wherever possible. Which leaves C02 emissions.

You're right about all the other threats to our safety and survival. But as we don't have direct control over their sources, all we can do is keep the Public aware that these things are going on, and hope that it provides enough pressure for the Government to do something about it. But as a Union, we have far more influence over the situation, than over other Companies. Yes, I know we have far less influence over RM than we used to have. But it's still far more than we have over BP, for example. :hmmmm
