SHAMED former postman Mark Scott was spared jail for failing to deliver thousands of items of mail.

The cash-strapped 26-year-old raided birthday cards and pocketed the money inside as well as keeping bags of undelivered mail stashed in his flat.

He gave a sigh of relief when magistrates told them they were giving him a second chance and were suspending his prison sentence.

Gateshead Magistrates’ Court heard Scott had worked for Royal Mail for five years and was earmarked for promotion.

But he turned to heroin as a “coping mechanism” after a series of tragedies and upsets.

In the space of a year his father died and his grandmother, who had brought him up, also passed away. And he split up from his girlfriend of four years after she cheated on him.

He lost money on the home they were sharing and went into debt setting himself up in a new flat.

But he took on too much and the junk mail piled up in the flat in Hewitson Terrace, Felling, Gateshead, he shared with a fellow postman.

In desperation he rifled through birthday and greeting cards for cash.

His antics were brought to an end when Royal Mail launched a probe after a member of the public found dumped junk mail.

Prosecutor Paul Heron told the court a search of Scott’s home in April revealed more than 6,000 items of undelivered mail in sacks and bundles from his Gateshead round, including junk mail, election polling cards and packages.

Opened letters and 64 cards were found stashed under his mattress.

“He admitted opening the cards looking for cash,” said Mr Heron. “He pointed out that they generally mentioned how much cash they obtained and when asked how much he thought he had obtained he said £200.

“He was asked what he had done with the money and he said paid debts off and a loan, also bank charges.”

Scott also admitted taking £60 in gift vouchers.

He told investigators he had failed to deliver the mail because of manic depression.

Michael Foley, defending, said: “Because he was trying to fight his way out of debt he took on extra door-to-door mail.

“He put them to one side intending to deliver them but eventually it got too much and overwhelmed him. He accepts that this was unacceptable.

“But more serious still he opened post. He knows how disappointing it is for people expecting a birthday card knowing someone has sent them something and he accepts that this was a serious breach of trust to his employer and to customers.”

At an earlier hearing Scott admitted raiding his mail bag and stealing £200 cash and £60 in gift vouchers contained in birthday cards, delaying more than 6,000 items of “junk mail” he was paid to deliver and delaying 400 postal packets.

After considering probation reports, magistrates gave him a four-month jail sentence suspended for a year. He was also given a 12-month supervised community order and must do 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £210 costs.
