Villagers who run Llanarmon's Raven Inn take over the post office

Villagers are celebrating their first anniversary running the community pub - by taking over the post office.

The Raven Inn, Llanarmon-yn-Ial, Denbighshire, opens its post office counter for the first time from noon-2pm, trailing the weekly Thursday service following consultation with locals.

Jim Pilkington, one of the committee members running the pub and post office, said the latest development marked a great year for the community.

He explained that the new service will be staffed by workers from Flint Post Office at the same time the pub runs its weekly lunch for village pensioners.

"We have been lobbying for this for some time," said Jim.

The village post office closed in October 2009 with the nearest alternative two miles (3.2km) away.

Sue Hodgins from Post Office Limited said: "The hours of service have been based on customer usage of the former branch.
"Should customer usage increase significantly, opening times would be adjusted accordingly."

Last August locals took on the traditional pub, calling it the Raven Community Pub as it is staffed by volunteers.

It is run with a committee to oversee and coordinate activity, under a company called Raven Mad Ltd, with profits put back into community projects.

This weekend the pub is taking part in the annual village show, hosting live music.

A weekend of celebrations is being planned (28-29 August) to mark the first anniversary of the community's pub venture.
