Which MDEC is going to close?

Don't know where you are MM but up here in Stoke I've not heard nowt
specifically about MDEC closure of this site. However:-
Me and my colleagues in RMCS have just seen a VR excercise take place
with a few taking the offer, mainly because of the dramatic decline in
morale at this office.
I heard 90 across the board took VR of the centres that it was offered to.
Whispered comments said they were looking for nearer 200.
Yesterday an e-mail came round, the gist of which talked of
further changes to the Customer Service offer, and outlining
a "consultation" excercise next month.
Whether it's Doxford, Salford or Stoke I'm not the only one
here, who think's one of us in for the chop. Where's your
money on?

I reckon they'll do it in reverse of the MDEC set up. When MDEC was first set up they thought Plymouth would be enough. It wasn't, so they set up Stockport, essentially as an overflow but like PLymouth on a 24 hr basis. Still wasn't enough for the peak mail sorting so Stoke had to be set up.

So my feeling is Stoke will go first simply because of it's operational hours, then Stockport and just Plymouth will be left.

That would be common sense if the idea behind savings was to try and keep the operational side running on the lowest cost per letter but not cutting so far as to impede it.

However, Royal Mail are making savings for savings sake. The upper tier of management believe we are close to bankruptcy and think the only way to survive is to cut cut cut hoping that the infrastructure left will be able to cope.

Another view is that with Privatisation on the horizon, if they call sell as much of the bricks and mortar as they can at the moment, the lower the cost to the new business and the better the "share" price will be for management who, if any do, get shares.

So my guess would be a combination of measuring how much ££££ the can save by closing each one, and factoring in the local cost of land and buildings in the area. The bigger the balance sheet with these combined, the more likely that particular MDeC will close.

Just wondering if anyone has heard anything new on the grapevine, I work at Plymouth mdec and have heard nothing official or unofficial. We have been told repeatedly nothing has been decided but you can't help but wonder. It would be a bad business move for RM to come out and announce anything about closures now in 2010, but then again knowing in advance can help workers at the MDEC start planning for the future eg placement of work in other areas in RM or to start training for a career change in 2 years time. I know career change is a laughable statement for a MDEC keyer, I'm happy enough here but knowing I need to get off my arse in 2 years time .... It would be nice to know that

Oh well... plenty of call-centres and warehouses we can go and work in when it closes. Can't see being offered another job internally, nothing left in Stoke-on-Trent now that the MC etc.. has shifted to Wolvo.

i work at Stoke Mdec. My money is on Stoke, because its the smallest one. No way would they take a big risk and get rid of Stockport (which is much bigger and has more operational hours) and i think Plymouth is bigger also? The Mdec management always say 'well we own the building so thats our advantage'. Well, dorks.......whats wrong with sticking up a for sale sign? ££££££. Has it ever once occured to the Mdec management at stoke that the building could be sold. Its not a marriage, its not like were stuck with the building for life. Seriously, there so silly and in denial that we are going to close.

also:

royal mail also has a history of closing down stoke sites first

daystaff numbers have subsided dramatically, they can barley fill 1 of the 3 large rooms which means that the building is being wasted and no point in maintaining a large building where we cant even fill half of it. Common Sense people.

I jumped Ship before from one of those three large rooms that are empty below you and
got £15,600 plus £1,400 for those "colleague shares" that cause so much merriment these days!
That was last September. Made sure I indented for the £1000 worth of retraining allowance
and don't regret a damn thing. That was after starting of with RMCS 8 years earlier.

I really hope you guy's get some serious coin out of the bas****ds, I wondered for a while whether
I'd jumped to soon, but judging by some of the comments on this board, I'm glad I went when I did.

Jumped up pri**k management were beginning to get to me, and I really couldn't stay once they'd
offered the brass.

Really good luck to you guy's, usd to have a good blether with some of you in the "Pig Pen" smoking
area. (That must have been thought up by a Boy scout btw, or was it a Big Girl Guide) You really
couldn't make it up could you.
