Four postal workers have set off on a marathon sponsored cycle for the third year running.
Royal Mail posties Mark Gallagher, Derek Pettigrew, Henry McKelvie and manager Joe McMonagle, have embarked on a 26-hour cycle to raise money for the Marie Curie charity.
They set off yesterday at 10am from the Glasgow Mail Centre in Springburn and will return today at midday, pedalling through the night to cover 315 miles in 26 hours.
The four will travel from the mail centre in Springburn to Campbeltown delivery office then on to Oban delivery office before heading back to the Glasgow centre.
The workers have raised £6000 for the Marie Curie Cancer Care Centre in Springburn over the last two years through previous cycling trips around the west of Scotland.
Joe McMonagle, 50, from Sprinburn, said they hoped to raise another £3000 for the centre through their trip this year.
He said: “The Evening Times have been very supportive over the last couple of years we’ve done this.
“It’s amazing how many people say they’ve seen us in the paper and would like to donate.”
“Everyone has been so supportive especially Royal Mail as they have provided food for us and given us the time off. The staff have been generous too. We are really thankful.”
The workers were given a tour of the new Marie Curie Hospice, in Springburn, earlier this week.
Mr McMonagle said the posties just wanted to “give something back”.
He said: “It was good to see the hospice. Marie Curie is such a worthwhile charity.
“Everyone knows someone who has had cancer or dealt with cancer.”
The workers are keen cyclists and cycle to work every day.
They have been joined on their journey by support drivers who provide supplies for the them, such as food and drink.
