London...?

Post by britwrit »

So, I don't know anything but which MC will... eventually/sometime soon... get the chop? Any opinions, informed or otherwise?

I work at Mount Pleasant and don't want it to be the one. However, there were plans a few years back (available via Google) to close and sell it off. It's near the West End and it would make a good site for a hotel. Plus, I worked at Paddington/West London before it shut. It's early (and maybe I'm just being paranoid) but it's starting to have that same "last day of term" feel about it.

Plus, I can't believe they'd close Nine Elms. It's more modern, the work area is located all on one level and you have good access into central London. The new American embassy is going to be built nearby and apparently, there are concerns about traffic. But seriously. The mail centre is already on the edge of an industrial park. How many more cars are we talking about here, especially since the rush will be only twice a day, eightish and fiveish?

Anyway, any thoughts?

Rumour has it Rathbone Place (even though it's a Delivery Office) is gonna bite the bullet, have been hearing that WC1/2 will move into the Mount by the end of the year but not sure if W1 will join em or be moved to Park Royal, apparently Royal Mail have already had a few offers in excess of £200mill for Rathbone Place, which will ensure a boost in profits and a nice bonus for the top brass before they move on.

Oh yeah. Just looked at a map. That's just north of Soho - right across Oxford Street. Fitzrovia, no? Even in this market, I could see that going for a pretty penny. My consolations.

We just heard today at the Mount that all foreign work is going to be transfered to HWDC/out to the airport. The Union is going to be "consulted" (much in the same way my former girlfriend sat me down and told me that "we" had decided to go our separate ways) but word on the street is that'll be gone by October.

FWIW, talked to a manager yesterday at the Mount. He said it was a done deal that it was going to be Nine Elms closing, with the property bought out by the American embassy. Most of the work would go to Croydon.

That isn't quite true, but not far off! The probability of nine elms closing in the near future is quite strong, but with regards to the american embassy they have already through a development company acquired the land needed to build it (that's if it goes ahead as I believe they are experiencing a few financial problems) which does not impact on the nine elms site , it's the regeneration of the whole area which will see nine elms go but thats not for a while yet.
With regards to the work going to croydon, part of the workload/force could go there but not all as it's to small to cope with both are workloads that is not unless they expand it.
To sum up read between the lines but I think in London we know whats going to happen it's just a case of when.
Hope this helps. :hmmmm

Britwit I wouldn't believe anything a manager says.
They seem to be responsible for most of the rumours flying around.

Yeah, I'm taking it with a truckload of salt. But the manager in question has always been a straight shooter (I know, they do exist). It was a simple statement of fact for him, not a chance to slap down a subordinate with malicious glee.

Even with the decent managers it's just speculation. They don't know anything more than the rest of us.

Certainly looks that way, surveyors have been busy in Rathbone Pl W1,
If they kept Nine Elms and sold the Mount they wouldn't be able to sell W1, it would be a nightmare travelling to the W1 area with all the traffic it they moved them to the Elms,
We all know it boils down to money with the ones who make the decisions, keep the Mount and sell off the other 2 and someone will pick up a nice big bonus for boosting profits. As the meerkat says "simples" :arrrghhh

For the record there are 3 mail centres in London at the moment. In 1994 there were 10.

Royal Mail have stated that they now believe that there only needs to be one mail in centre in London meaning that 2 will close.

There are currently 3 options on the table , one of those options includes closing rathbone as well.

Royal Mail do not need to annouce their perfered option until 3rd September.

But the CWU in London do not support any of Royal Mail`s options.

More info will be given soon.
