Royal Mail lorries 'keep residents awake'

ROYAL Mail delivery lorries are being blamed for churning up part of Hanworth Road and disturbing residents' sleep.

Householders living near the Jubilee Mail Centre on Godfrey Way are gathering a petition to demand a cut in the number of heavy goods vehicles going past their homes.

The campaign is being led by pensioner Shakundla Joshi, who said the number of lorries going to and from the site has increased dramatically over the past year.

The 73-year-old said: "The big lorries are running up and down 24 hours a day now. It has been getting worse day by day. You can hear it at night, we can't sleep properly. We paid £2,500 for more glazing on our house and it was a waste of money because it hasn't made any difference."

Some properties have large cracks in them, thought to be a result of the lorries.

The road has been damaged to the extent that two stretches of Hanworth Road have already been resurfaced in a bid to improve safety for motorists.
Cllr Clare Head, Richmond Council’s cabinet member for traffic, said: "Good quality, safe roads are a priority for the council in all areas of the borough. We share people’s frustrations that the road surface has been damaged recently through extra use. As soon as money becomes available in the next financial year, a bid will be submitted for more sections of it to be improved.

"As well as this, our Street Scene Inspectors will check the road regularly to ensure it is safe to use. If the road surface deteriorates significantly, I would invite residents to let us know so it can be assessed again."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Our Jubilee Mail Centre is located on a large industrial site and operates 24 hours a day processing and distributing mail. We are not aware of local concerns regarding noise levels and we will naturally look very carefully into any issues raised with us - including any petition."

But mail volumes are falling. Those lorries must be empty.

Nah - the Jubilee Mail Centre handled a lot of work from London during the strikes last year,
and a lot of the Inward Foreign mail, which used to go to Mount Pleasant is still being diverted there.

The lorries we use, aren't much louder than a car, these days. It is possible to hear them through double glazing, but you can hear cars through them too. But they're right about the extra wear and tear on the roads. Particularly if they're using a lot of those Double Decker trailers. They are up to 44 Tons (the max for lorries in the UK, without a special license and an escort). Whereas, the normal trailers, were 38 Tons max (some were lighter). Something RM probably didn't consider, when they introduced them.
