Article on 53 year old thief says the following:
In interview, Hughes said he had not delivered the post because he was under too much pressure at work and had not taken it back to the sorting office because he was embarrassed.

Ashy himself says:
I was hugely embarassed and felt ashamed of myself

What it doesn't say is 2 things:

1) Why he took something home that didn't belong to him in the first place
2) Why he didn't take it back the next day, or the next, or the next...............?

Granted 'ashy' hasn't been convicted of theft but taking something that doesn't belong to you is theft, however you spin it or tree hug it and that's what gets my goat. Its not something to be pitied or blamed on someone else. Its breaking the law. Simples :speak to the hand

but he also said he was not looking for sympathy....... but calling him a thief is a bit much, he made a mistake and is paying the price.
But bad advice at work could be an issue as i got told i could take parcles home and drop them off in the morning and the collection office if i left a card (although i never have)

Yes ok your right there but come on if your going to lay down the letter of the law then we are all guilty, for example : who drives just a little faster than 30 mph in built up areas ?

The two cases are different as one is far worse than the other but the result will be pretty much the same as both parties will be punished, so whats the big deal really ?

The Great Train Robbers made a mistake too - the question is - Is theft dependent on the value or is a 1p the same as a £1?

Maybe it's a generation thing or military thing but to me taking what isn't yours is stealing - excuses are like statistics.

Nah dont give up :dance

35 mph     i was talking 32 tops :Very Happy Just kidding.

Yes both people took mail home but only one stole from it. In the first case he simply knew no better and being naïve he thought it was the norm and ok to take the mail home and bring back the next day.
If he came on here and said I stole the mail and I am worried then I think that would be different.

I guess it depends on your perception. If he had p739 a parcel of mine but returned it un-opened to the office the next day because he thought that was the procedure I would be ok with that.

Ps. I just read your RM letter on the other thread, sorry, :cry makes me :evil/mad

ashy wrote:Basically i joined Royal Mail back in March as a part-time postman, i'm 21 years old. When i started things went well and i got on with things happily i was loving it but into April i really started to struggle with my workload and ended up taking the odd letters home. I'll say now for you guys and i told them in the interview when i got caught i swear on my life that i never stole anything or attempted to destroy anything but i did admit fully to intentional delay. My girlfriend has a baby and she works evenings so i couldn't work beyond 4PM when i started it said i would be finished for 2PM and as i was finishing beyond 3, i didn't know what to do.

No-one had told me when i started what to do with mail i couldn't deliver, as no-one works after 3 delivery wise i just assumed as the law says it had to be done so i got it done, i never claimed for a single hour of overtime despite working over 2pm because well i wasn't shown and i still don't know how to. After a while i began taking the odd bundle home with me fully intentional on delivering it the day after or on my day off. I know i shouldn't do this but i had no choice what with me having to get finished and i physically couldn't do it. It felt embarassing as a new guy and being the youngest in our DO by miles that i couldn't complete my round so i stupidly never told anyone about it, i rarely spoke to anyone but our line manager as i came in at 9 and was gone for 10 i didn't really think i could bring myself to tell someone i was failing at my job.

Anyway after a couple of weeks struggling, well the Post Office Security guys caught up with me, i walked out of our DO at 3:30pm and i was basically told my rights and they asked to search my property. The only mail i had was in my boot but i still had my parents and my girlfriends property searched, obviously the only items found were in my car, i fully complied however with every process.

I was hugely embarassed and felt ashamed of myself after what happened and after 2 weeks of suspension i was sacked, this was 3 weeks ago, so this week on wednesday it will of been 6 weeks since the Post Office Security guys caught me. Now obviously i understand i commited a criminal offence but i've been unable to sleep properly and alsorts the last week or so with the worry, i have no criminal record but i'm worried beyond anything that i'll end up in court and worst at the end of it prison. With my girlfriend not working and relying on me for support i've never been so scared and the worry is becoming unbearable hence why i'm posting.

One of the Security guys told me not to worry about prison as that won't happen but still having never been in trouble with the police before i'm so scared its unreal, they told me it would take 4-6 weeks to hear if i would be prosecuted but i've yet to hear anything. The wait is becoming unbearable. We also had a holiday booked this august with her family and i'm just so worried that something will fall on those dates too. I'm not expecting sympathy or anything at all I just wanted to say if anyone in any capacity could give me some advice on what i should expect it would help set my mind at ease.
Don't you think that they'd have found some evidence of other Mail, if it had, had a chance to build up? :hmmmm
It looks to me, like he was doing what he claimed he was: Delivering it on his days off. Just how big a boot do you think his car had? :d'oh! :hmmmm

No just work on your comprehension - The "Scared" poster was caught bringing them back and had every intention of delivering them, although we do only have their word for that. The newspaper case was outright theft - he opened and kept the mail and anything he found.

Yes both were stupid, and both guilty of a crime, however intention is always a deciding factor in law and therefore "scared" is only guilty of delaying the post, the other is guilty, and has been found so by a court of law, of outright theft.

---------------------

BTW disagree entirely about the speed thing, for one theft is unlikely to cause death or serious injury except as an incidental cause. Where as speed in accidents has a massive impact:

30 mph - in a car accident involving a pedestrian at this speed there is a one in five chance the pedestrian will be killed.
35 mph - in a car accident involving a pedestrian at this speed there is a one in two chance the pedestrian will be killed.
40 mph - in a car accident involving a pedestrian at this speed there is a nine in ten chance the pedestrian will be killed.

Yes its really worring the speed some people tear about the streets. Mind you it does not help with all the 4x4's on the roads as if you get hit by one of those your going under the wheels at almost any speed.

You might want to read up about the subject you are so clearly misinformed about before making any more unfounded and deplorable accusations....

Theft Act 1968

On the subject of wilfull delays, what would you do with a mis-sort at the end of your walk if you had one that is at the opposite end of the walk, considering you don't drive a car?

edit: change last question to hypothetical to avoid "make sure they are sorted properly" type answers.
