Who's your union rep ? Allan Leighton ?

You're not insured to carry mail in your private car.
You are only paid from your official start time.
Overtime is voluntary.

Stopping doing any of these things is your RIGHT. If you 'landed in trouble', no industrial tribunal would agree that Royal Mail can sack you for refusing to do things that are not in your contract !!!!

Some of my mates were working for Royal Mail in the '80s and '90s and all they talk about was the mass meetings in canteens that used to run strikes in the past. Do those still happen anywhere? If people can be persuaded to take meal breaks before they go out, maybe they could be brought back? It'd help to get people on-side with the 318 - which short of an all-out strike and more co-ordination with the rest of the public sector seems like the best bet at the moment.

Catch we had one in our canteen about 2 years ago when a late wagon came in and the DOM said we had to sort it and take it all and no-one was allowed to cut off. SO off we all trooped to the canteen for our break. about 1/2hr later we were told we only had to take what was already bundled up/thrown off on the frames. (Yes it was so late that most had started bundling up)

See thats how the Union helps Margate otherwise most would have been out till 3.00 or even 4.00

That's good to hear that they're still happening. I guess in the 2003 wildcats they did as well? Do you know of any during this dispute? I think a return of them is the best chance of enforcing the 318 and standing firm if there's a very crappy offer from RM down the line.

I think Oxford had about 5 days of strikes last week and that was started by a mass meeting in the car park apparently. I think your right we should have mass meetings at MR time but it would be hard to organise, some would not attend and the reps would get a hard time from Management as they would say they are trying to get unofficial action going. All because of the anti-union rules that Liebour have still not repealed.

Didn't know about the car park meeting, that's interesting to hear.

Inside or outside of the meal break, even a small number of people can have a big effect overall. I understand they'd be very hard to organise though. I tried to get meetings going at my old work (FE college, not RM), and we had a couple but it's a big job.

on harry potter day i asked the manager if i could talk to the members on the floor explaining the brief from HQ he squirmed a bit as it was pissing down but said NO

so i told him that we have a gate meeting before we started work at 5.30

so we had our meeting in the rain how many of us would stand in the rain to listen to the DUMs do a WTLL session

the guys were briefed but were damp and the manager got some stick for being petty

the problem i have with this is that some members would work thru as they will be out on delivery having guys on the gate in our office early is keeping some of them out as they dont wanna face us

cant see this working in my office but might be wrong think it will be harder to maintain any discipline and control over the situation

Yes in my office they would have to make it 8.00am as they let us out at 8.30. Good idea though as you would know straight away who was breaking the strike they would have nowhere to hide (unless they called in sick).

lisburnpostie wrote:Has anyone worked out how much Royal Mail has saved in Wages when we are out on the Picket Line?

How many weeks will it take of us Striking for Royal Mail to cover the 2.5% wage rise on offer. Or will Royal Mail management sit it out untill this 2.5% is covered, save what they initially offered and possibly use it as a bit extra and actually cost them nothing or infact profit them.

I think it is time to rethink the current action and start hurting Royal Mail and not our Wage Packets.
To get a fair balance on this you would also need to factor in the extra costs that RM have incurred because of the strike such as:

Paying casuals to clear the backlog at mail centres
The OT payments to sort out the mess casuals cause.
The costs of informing businesses of collection/delivery arrangements when we are on strike, the amount of complaints and bad press !?

they are probably others you could include but it would take a better accountant than me do it:
