This!
Its the only sensible way to do it.

1) Staff will be able to choose a partner BEFORE the repick. Anyone who cant be paired by consent will rely on their own seniority.
2) This hasnt been fully decided but either i) You add the seniority of the 2 duty holders together and divide by 2 to get overall seniority or ii) the most senior duty holder gets to pick the duty with the 2nd individual taking the other (some staff dont see why 20+ years should be split just because they want a newie as a buddy)
3) Once this has been decided its down to a traditional repick using the fugures from the above system.
Pros and cons?
What if 2 drivers pair up together and there are not enough drivers to go round? Or if 2 non-drivers pair up together
The issue of being paired with somoene you dont get on with has been raised in my office. The reply given was that as we are in a work establishment, people should have a professional attitude and be able to get along. In the poerfect world this may be true, but we aint living in a perfect world. I can forsee problems ahead unless things are done very cautiously.
Before you choose any duty, I suggest everyone checks out which other duty it is paired with and who is likely to get it before you commit yourself to working with somoene.
Obviously pairs will have to follow driver/non driver criteria.
So if an individual has stated on the preference exercise (yes i know its non binding) that they wish to drive they would be encouraged to pick a driving duty thereby having to pair up with a non driver of their choice.
We have people who refuse to talk to, let alone work with 'strike breakers' and also believe me when i say there are people who you DO NOT want to have to deal with on a daily basis at my office. Being paired with these individuals would be a living hell.
Seniority is a lottery really. Letting people choose who they are paired and then going with the seniority system seems more sensible for the business and its staff. If you have a high seniority you get the first pick of partners and duties.
So,an office could have the situation like where the 2 duties are miles away from each other?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been. My BFF Clash The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
We had better all become drivers, it seems to me. There will only be a few walking duties.
I can't see RM taking on any staff in the future who do not (or do not want) to drive for them. Matching people up will be a regular headache otherwise, what with holidays, sickness etc. In time, pretty much everyone will be expected to drive.

Pick you can't just add up two guys seniority.
That means people jumping the queue and i don't know about your office but in mine that would start a riot.
As i said earlier all it will take is one guy to be p*ssed off with what he gets and the whole thing will come tumbling down.

It wouldn't make any sense to have duties that aren't adjacent to one another BUT people should get away from the idea of there being two duties. On a park and loop the duty should be specifically designed for park and loop, that means specials, tracked, large parcels and possibly a collection or two together with the daily delivery.
Make sure that the new delivery spec IS for park and loop and not just a short cut by bolting two duties together and that the new duty is risk assessed anew, because the new delivery design calls for golf trolleys to be carried for each person - now the original idea was for no more than 20 minute loops, which begs the question why would you need a golf trolley?
Fortunately after nearly two years we are well used to P&L and the gradual erosion of parcel and bulk duties - so be warned, watch your backs.

Was it?! The trolley can hold upto 32kg WTF is the point 20 minutes is about a bundle for me.
It's all fairly simple to me what should happen. You have a revision and duties are paired together then senior guy gets first pick and so on. Now as you go down the list of seniority people will have a choice,do they take the walk they want or the partner they want. The driver/non driver thing may complicate things a little but shoudnt do too much, most people can drive and shouldn't restrict their choices by refusing to do so and non drivers should be able to pick a duty along seniority lines.
This ain't no baseball game, you get only one chance and you blew it.

This was mentioned, but too many senior people didnt like the fact they may be paired with someone they dont like - they would rather be able to choose their partner and duty...so the reps are looking at alternatives to the existing seniority system due to demand.

theyre not talking about adding it up. one of the ideas was to add it together and divide by two.
I dont see any alternative at present - if you stick to traditional seniority when sharing vans then you would have a situation whereby anyone could be paired with anyone - its a lottery. I know theres one or two people i could not work with at my office, if i were paired with them i'd probably hang myself.
