if you go for the special leave, it will be unpaid (SPL/C) . Only death of close family members, parents, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters, or jury service are paid special leave (SPL/A).
However, there are other options than special leave, like annual leave, time in lieu, flexi time, that lets you take time off with pay, although some of them having to work the time back after the absence. You should have been given these options I believe.

2 . Mandatory elements
• Special leave is a provision provided by Royal Mail that enables our people to take authorised time off in excess of their annual leave provisions.
• Special leave is discretionary in nature but in some circumstances (such as Dependants leave, jury service), the employee is already entitled through legislation to take unpaid time off in any event (see the Special Leave guidance document, obtainable electronically from section 3 below or via HR help).
• Special Leave must be applied for via an application form, which is available on HR Help.
• The line manager will decide whether to grant special leave with or without pay. Some situations will automatically be without pay (career breaks, dependants leave and extended leave after maternity leave).
• The criteria used to make decisions must be clear and explained to the individual, especially in situation where an application for special leave is refused.
• All completed forms should be sent to HRSC Sick Absence
• Pay is deducted equal to the agreed time off as soon as reasonably possible after the application is received.
• Any period of unpaid special leave will not count towards reckonable service.
• Any long periods of unpaid special leave may not count towards annual leave accrual.
• The special leave process should be conducted fairly, promptly, in a non-discriminating way.

The post was from Royal Mails HR policy document on special leave.
The point was that your line manager does have the discretionary power to grant paid special leave in this case.
I am not saying he will and he probably won't.....but he can.

Re: baby boy in hospital special leave
well best of it is i am part time 27 and 1/2 hrs a week and i lost £100 a week from working and child tax because i kept getting put on a lot of full time duties last year so this year i decided i was going to do my contracted hrs and discussed this with dom and when i got to 27 1/2 hrs it would count towards one week of annual leave.1 week before my little boy was taken ill id completed 30 hrs of overtime and booked a free week in dec why did he not remove this and offer it to me that week when i needed it most.i actually took up the offer of annual leave credits with my overtime to suit him as he was up the creek already with the state of the office duties so this was benefiting him more than it was me i was quite happy to go in and do 5 1/2 hrs a day and that was thanks i got for it a kick in the gonads.this has basically screwed up our finances as a result its had a knock on effect with everything else i even told the council office the reason why we could not pay our rent last week was because i have an arsehole as a manager.im sorry for ranting but i feel very very agreived by this issue as i have done nothing but bend over backwards for this company.but subsequently i feel like ive bent over forwards now if you get my meaning.
