It's full steam ahead for 19th-century trike

A STEAM tricycle built by a local postman in 1895 will be among an array of historic vehicles taking to the Grampian Transport Museum circuit this month in the first Alford Cavalcade attraction since 2002.

The revival of the showcase event will take place on Sunday with the museum’s Craigievar Express taking pride of place.

Museum curator Mike Ward oversaw preparations on the gleaming veteran vehicle yesterday and said: “It is the museum’s most cherished exhibit, and will be in full steam for the first time for five years.

“It is a wonderful piece of local history and will be a real hit with the crowds.”

Mr Ward, of Backwaird in neighbouring Craigievar, said the vintage cavalcade was one of the original crowd-pullers at Alford – attracting up to 8,000 spectators – and helped raise funds for the new museum and continued to be held for a quarter of a century.

The revamped event will take place from 11am-5pm and feature a line-up of historic transport dating from 1890 until 1955. On show will be everything from horse-drawn to steam-powered and motor-driven vehicles.

The Craigievar Express was built by postie Andrew Lawson, who was born at Baad Croft, near Craigievar Castle.

He created his first bicycle at home at the age of 10, and went on to build a pioneering water-powered hydro-electric generator at his rural Old Schoolhouse home near Alford. He died in 1938 at the age of 84.

Also on show on July 25 will be a Sentinel steam lorry that was delivered new to an Aberdeen construction firm in 1930 and was still working with Aberdeen Harbour Board at the docks 30 years later.
