Drug user had 14,000 diazepam tablet delivered in post

A DRUG user in Peterhead was sent almost 14,000 diazepam tablets by post in a bid to wean himself off class-A drugs.

Karl McGeary had 10,000 of the pills sent from Pakistan to his home address in Peterhead, the town’s sheriff court heard.

But procurator fiscal David Thorburn said immigration officials seized the package in Coventry and passed the class-C drugs to police.

McGeary also had two other parcels sent to the homes of his former neighbours in the town’s George Street, the Peterhead Sheriff Court heard.

He was eventually snared by police when a warrant to search his house was executed, said the fiscal.

A further 3,569 diazepam tablets were found by the police when McGeary’s home was raided, added Mr Thorburn.

McGeary, 28, admitted being concerned in the supply of diazepam at 4 George Road and the Royal Mail delivery depot, both Peterhead.

The offence, which also took place in Coventry and elsewhere, happened on or between May 1 and 25.

Defence agent Sam Milligan said McGeary, who was listed in Peterhead Sheriff Court papers as a prisoner in Aberdeen’s Craiginches jail, had a “significant” problem with class-A drugs.

“The purpose of obtaining the tablets was in an effort to wean him and one other individual from the chronic and longstanding problem,” said Mr Milligan.

McGeary was sentenced to 10 months in prison, backdated to May 26 this year.
