A postie [postman] for less than a year...

I was actually quoting what someone sarcastically (I believe) in my office said recently (i.e., I was playing "Devil's advocate"

), perhaps due to an general, underlying, company-wide feeling brought about by expecting walks in the medium term to be covered by which ever postman happens to be available. It was interesting - but not entirely surprising - to receive the responses which were made.

As you say, customers will easily be able to tell when a regular postman is not delivering the mail (for the all-too-common reasons, which I won't go into here). After about three weeks of delivering the mail, it seems that people invariably start to ask me, "Are you going to be our new postman?". As I don't have my own walk, I don't have a suitable answer to give them.

I believe people still do have respect for the posties, every now and again, people acknowledge you in the street, how many other jobs can match that, I used to be a driver for a supermarket, no one would go come up to me and say morning mr supermarket man,but if your a postie, they say hello, well some do

but to be truthful, doesn't really bother me in the slightest

When we were a service and had to be dressed properly in a respected uniform and ties had to be worn no matter what,
then yes we had respect.
But programmes on TV haven't helped us at all and postpeople wearing ,more or less what they want to wear without being challenged(baseball caps round the wrong way for instance and white trainers etc)
Nobody has got time to clean vans anymore so they go round like a pile of s__t
Is it any wonder we are getting less respect??

I like to think that my customers respect me,i hope so anyway.
One thing i'm sure of. When i relinquish my round, either through retirement or change
of duty,quite a few of my customers will remain good friends.
Don't suppose :lfo :cfo :mfo will be able to say the same.

Yes totally agree all pride has gone, period!..Have u noticed when the vans get dents they are no longer repaired as it is commercially not viable..Maybe so...BUT how many other corporate vehicles go around with great big dents in???

Its discusting!

I do still believe the majority of the public still respect us,ok you get the odd miserable prat, but I lost count the amount of times people just stop in the road to greet me, good morning postie etc, even say to their child look it the postman

and even dogs give you the odd greeting now and again

been in the job for under a year now and tell you the truth it's mainly the older folks who greet you, while the younger adult generation just ignore you...

I wear a tie with the uniform on delivery because I want to try an make an effort I started wearing it after being on deliveries for roughly a year and I have noticed that customers do respond more positively towards me for doing so. I just get s**t from the other posties for wearing it tho which is nice.

You may have a lot of respect for Winston Churchill but he sent in troops against people in South Wales who had the audacity to go on strike. Never forgiven for that down our way i'm sorry to say.
