well considering brothermagrew that the entire argument in the piece is that although we will have a great deal more vans on the road they will be more fuel efficient it would most definitely appear to be spin.
Why not just replace the existing fleet with more efficient vans,re-introduce dedicated packet deliveries and employ a few thousand more OPGs or am i just being ridiculous. :chuckle

The changes we are making in deliveries involves a number of steps and it is certainly not simply a case of a straightforward switch into vans of those postmen and women who currently use cycles on delivery.

The changes we need to make are being planned in an environmentally responsible way. It’s important to recognise that a postman or woman on foot or on a cycle cannot carry all of the mail they deliver on a typical round. We therefore have to send out replenishment bags of mail in vehicles and often this involves older, more polluting vans, which, in many cases, are the crew buses also used to take our delivery people out to the start of their rounds. Ceasing the operation of replenishment vehicles wil in itself reduce carbon emissions. The new vans which we are now introducing in place of bicycles are smaller and more fuel efficient than the older larger vans that were previously used to replenish our postmen and women while on their rounds. We are also now able to end the practice of thousands of postmen and women using their own private cars on delivery – again, with the activity now carried out by new Royal Mail vehicles, such as the Peugeot Bipper, for example, which produces significantly less carbon than most private cars.

trying to fit 2 duties and 'van' packets in the back are a nightmare!

NO they didn't :no no it was always Union policy not to use Cars, you must be thinking of the insurance bond arrangement, which was looked over by the Union and approved, only so to protect the drivers interests, after all
the Union's first and foremost role is to protect the interest of its members even it is only to protect them from their own stupidity.
 I was actually in on a meeting, where, after a trial run on the ban the Union gave their blessing to the use of cars being allowed again! As I say, I do not use my car. but. lets be honest here, the cars are still being used at present, because the unions have agreed to it until all those C.D.V. are brought in. I have also been saddened to witness some of those who use their cars being quietly targeted by reps, who on the one hand, agree with Management they can be used, and putting another face on to those who use them. If the union, and managment want to stop the use of cars, quite simply, stop it now! not in 1,2,-or three years when it suits R/M.Although not agreeing with the use of cars, I find all the baying for blood that some members have for those who use them almost tantamount to bullying and harrassment---
not a pretty sight.

2006 Article
After years of campaigning against the use of private cars on delivery, the Communication Workers Union took a pragmatic stance and tried to negotiate with Royal Mail (Postal deliveries by car increasing risk of thefts, March 11). Our objective was an agreement that contained risk assessments, safe systems of working, maintenance of vehicles carried out by trained Royal Mail mechanics, regular roadworthiness checks, the provision of comprehensive insurance and the appropriate remuneration for our members. The agreement would also have ensured that customers' mail was safeguarded at all times. Unfortunately, Royal Mail broke off negotiations to pursue its own strategy over the heads of the union. Its strategy ignores many of the safeguards that we attempted to negotiate and is primarily based on reducing costs. The answer is either to negotiate an agreement, or ban the use of private cars on delivery. Personally, I would prefer the latter.
Bob Gibson
National assistant secretary, CWU

CWU Conference 2006 Voice Magazine Article
Ban private cars!
The CWU is to launch a national campaign
against the use of private cars on delivery
duties.
Annual Conference backed a motion
calling for more information about the
hidden costs – and dangers – of using
private vehicles to be made available to
members.
Those who use their cars to make
deliveries risk not being covered if they
do not have a ‘business use’ clause in
their insurance policies and get only
‘third party’ coverage through the Royal
Mail Bond.
This means members themselves
may have to bear the cost if their car is
stolen or damaged on duty. They also risk
disciplinary action if mail is stolen from
the vehicle.
Currently the cost of petrol, insurance
and wear and tear are all borne by the
private car user — this means low paid
workers are saving Royal Mail thousands.
Assistant secretary Bob Gibson told
the Voice: “The use of private cars is
fraught with legal implications and health
and safety issues. The only safe and
sensible solution is to stop using them.”

At our place we have royal mail trailers on order to cope with the heavier days. Just drop them onto the back of your CDV and away you go. Saying that though roofracks were mentioned but they were deemed a H&S issue.

I'll bet most of the anti-car brigade in this thread are in offices slap bang in the middle of town that have deliveries within walking distance of the front gate.

Whilst I admire some of you folks taking a stance your inability to look at the situation from a perspective other than your own is shameful.

And for the record, to my knowledge no-one who covers my job ever uses the official transport so aren't subject to B&H if they can't complete.

Fair doos brother but then again just how exactly are you meant to keep the mail safe and secure in them?

I wouldn' bet too much because you would be wrong, and you also suffer from this"inability" to look at a situation other than your own.It would take me 30 mins in a morning to walk to my first drop, so I jump on the van and get him to drop me off.You might not get any hassle from your managers because your a good little postie that uses his own transport however,,,,If I was to do your walk I would have to aproach them for keys/drop box locations, sort out transportation via a van driver(and in some cases piss about bundling up because the frame actually runs up more convieniantly to a car than drop boxes).I couldn't care less if you were to fly on a pig to get to your first door with the job and off system.but in order for this system to stand a chance of working the playing field needs to be even.Judgee mentioned earlier we needed to grow balls and have it out with the gaffers, well I do ,on an almost daily basis.Al you get is,,,,well joe blogs can do it!. yh joe blogs that comes in early like a muppet and uses his own transport.the days of coming in early and finishing early have GONE!,because if you get caught finishing early you better believe your walks gonna grow.At first I put the blame on managers, but its the muppets cutting corners and giving off false that are to blame!.

I don't come in early, I'm full time, why would I come in early?

As for keys and pouch boxes, my spares are on a hook on the fitting.

You won't have a problem going out in the van, there is a crewbus going in that direction, empty except the driver.

And the frame is arranged as it always has been, around the pouch boxes, you'd have no problem.

Mr Blonde, one day you will re read through this thread and you will kick yourself.
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
