We have had 4,5 maybe more cases like that in my Office. We are normally told to take more care and not to do it again.

Just what i was thinking  ,we would have lost most of our staff over the years if such mistakes resulted in losing your job!

Always amuses me to see parts of delivery and packets sitting in office overnight and then when a manager discovers one piece of mailsort left in a frame the postie gets treated like they've murdered somone!

Good luck anyway,if that's all you've done with any decent rep you should be okay other than having some sort of warning or something on your record.

and this is not the 1st time this has happened.
What was the situation and how many times have you done this?

Oh and NEVER EVER EVER see management alone for conduct issues.

Could it be argued though that if the offer of having a Rep present at the interview was not given by the DOM then this in itself could be seen as not following procedure or is it the case that it's up to the individual to ask for representation prior to being interviewed?

Possibly, but the reality within Royal Mail is that managers will themselves inform the individual that there is no need for union representation at fact finding interviews. As it is supposedly only an informal one to one meeting to establish the facts. It is where it digresses into a more formal situation (talking discipline) that the informal meeting should be concluded there and then, and if need be a more proper and formal meeting is arranged with union representation present.

Maybe better put:
If your employer refuses to let you bring a companion, you should not attend a formal hearing, Instead you should put in writing that you will not attend until you are allowed to bring a companion with you as is your right under the Employment Relations Act 1999.

If you have a meeting with your employer that you think is entirely informal but he or she then tries to give you a formal warning or impose some other punishment, then you should politely ask for the meeting to stop at that point and then be reconvened at a time when you can bring a companion.

If they still go ahead, you should write after the meeting and ask for it to be held again with your chosen companion present. You should also write down as full a note as possible describing what happened at the meeting. But don't forget you can be dismissed on the spot without any hearing for gross misconduct.

•If your employer refuses to allow you to bring a companion you can complain to an Employment Tribunal.
•If they sack you because you tried to take a companion into the hearing, you can claim unfair dismissal at an Employment Tribunal. Unlike some unfair dismissal claims how long you have worked for your employer does not matter.
•If you are sacked for other reasons, but you were not allowed to take a companion into the hearing then you are likely to have a strong case at a Tribunal, and you may well get extra compensation.
•If you lose out in some other way - for example by losing performance related pay - you can make a claim to an Employment Tribunal.
Any complaint to an Employment Tribunal must be made within three calendar months of the day on which your employer refused to allow you to be accompanied or from the date of dismissal if you are dismissed.

If you are still employed by that employer, the tribunal can order the employer to hold the hearing again and allow you to be accompanied. If you have been dismissed you will be entitled to compensation for the breach of your right to be accompanied as well as compensation for the dismissal if it is found to be unfair. This is a complex legal area and you should seek advice from your union or another advice agency.

 Feel sorry for you Jessiegirl--let us know how you get on, and good luck, but as other posters have said, you will not be the first person to do this, and if you can prove others in your office have done the same, it's start, and no way, should you have been interviwed on your own.

did the manager photo copy any of the mail ? if not weres the proof ? Would not stand up in a court of law. You need a rep asap and to argue unexcussed delay of mail not wilfull or any other serious charge. Ask around see if any one else has done this and the manager turned a blinded eye. Does the office have a clear frames policy if not then unexcussed delay is common pratice.Good luck

I think the damage has all ready been done...you said too much already and like you i always thought honesty was the best policy but when you`re working for liars and bullies it does not pay to be so...

Most of the DOMS i have had the miss fortune to work for are total toss pots.. little YES men that are only interested in getting their bonuses..and they will do anything to achieve the figures...

One thing I will say Jessie its only a job (poxy job at that) please dont let it upset you too much and dont let your DOM intimidate you and make you feel like you`ve comitted a terrible crime..I would rather tell my DOM to kiss my arse than let him use this tiny mistake as a weapon against me

How long you been in the job ?

Remember always respect yourself...dont allow yourself to be treated like a piece of s**t

It amazes me the amount of people who get some gratification when they do this. "Boss, boss I found this in the van just now..." I just hope that this person is happy with their snitching ways now and hope that they too are sooo perfect that they will never cock up and make a mistake.
I always say though that if you do get someone out of the sh*t one time, you make a point of telling them and letting them know it. A simple thank you suffices and also makes them aware that you're watching one anothers backs. Christ knows we have enough managers out there let alone some snivelling brown nose 'fellow workers' working one up you too.
Exactly. Even if you weren't in the following day, it could have been handed in to the next person. That's one advantage of working indoors. If something is found, there's little or no chance in working out who left it there. So it just gets handed in to MV, unless it's late. In which case, we do see the MV Manager about it (so he can make special arrangements, to rush it through). But no-one to my knowledge has got into trouble over it. After all. We're only Human. So inevitably we'll all make mistakes occasionally. So long as the problem's fixed ASAP, where's the harm? :hmmmm
There's certainly no need for threats of disciplinary action, unless you're a regular offender. :arrrghhh

Jimmy Carr`s laugh wrote:Bloke at our place got back to work at 2:30pm - office locked up but gates open. Had f/l packets in his van and had to get kid at school at 3pm - and was off duty at 2pm. So left van in yard with the packets inside, all locked up and went home. Morning after, suspended. week later sacked. They said there was a manager inside and all he had to do was ring the doorbell - there`s never a manager there after about 1030am FFS.
I'm sorry but I do not buy that. There must be something more to it than that. This has been done many a time at our place and although not openly acknowledged, is still overlooked on many occasions.

Perhaps he's rubbed a Manager up the wrong way, or they just need to get rid of FT Duties. :hmmmm

So true

We had a newbie for about 4 months who chucked 3 chunks of mail in the live mail bag as ran out of del time. Yes silly but he panicked under pressure. The annoying thing is that he got sacked for one stupid mistake cos a collegaue went running to boss . I aint condoning WD but the bloke that did the grassing is the biggest fiddler in the office and is now on fake sick till he retires in 3 weeks. Glass houses and all that

Yes willfull implys intentional, which this was not, make up any old bull s**t about your partner leaving you and taking the kids and that your mind wasn't on the job, also try to think of examples of managers leaving mail for the next day etc, at my office they leave mail and packets all the time but then come down on us if we forget a letter.
