UNION leaders at Crewe Mail Centre have launched a blistering attack on new Business Secretary Vince Cable claiming he has ignored their calls for a meeting.

Steve Wright, branch secretary of the Communication Workers’ Union, is furious Mr Cable has not replied to a letter from workers at the Weston Road centre, which is due to close as the work is transferred to Warrington.

Already some staff are being bussed to Warrington and Mr Wright said Mr Cable had been contacted asking for his support to help keep some services on site at Crewe with a view to possible expansion in the future.

He said the former Business Secretary had been more helpful.

“At least Lord Young met us face to face, this Vince Cable has taken none of our concerns on board and ignored the people of Crewe and Nantwich.”

Crewe and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson, who has backed the fight to keep the mail centre open, said: “Obviously this is disappointing. I am urgently trying to secure a short-notice meeting with the Lib Dem special adviser at the Department for Business so that we can find out what is going on.”
