South Harrow Post Office reopening is 'fantastic' says Harrow MP Gareth Thomas

POLITICIANS have welcomed the decision to reopen a South Harrow Post Office after it was closed for ten months.

Residents and businesses have been forced to travel into the town centre or to Northolt since the branch was shut in October following a row between Post Office Ltd and the owners of the newsagent where it was based.

Since then politicians have been campaigning for it to be resurrected, collecting signatures from concerned residents and arranging meetings with the company.

Gareth Thomas, Labour MP for Harrow West, said: “It's fantastic news, I'm actually delighted. I'm a little frustrated that it's taken this long.

“I think the closure was hugely inconvenient because residents had to schlep into central Harrow. To have it open again will be a huge relief to residents in South Harrow.”

Councillor Graham Henson, responsible for performance, customer services and corporate services, said he was still concerned the future of the branch would depend on the success of the shop it has moved to.

He told the Harrow Times he would like to see it become a crown Post Office again.

He said: “We are very please that the services are reopening in South Harrow but we are a bit concerned that it's still in a retail premises.”
