Could you do with more money? Looking for seasonal work? Unable to take on a permanent position due to other commitments?

Royal Mail are now recruiting casual staff to sort and deliver the mail. If you are able to work to tight deadlines while maintaining a professional and positive image, you are the type of person we’re looking for.

Pay Rate: £5.95 per hour at age 18

Contract Length: up to 12 weeks

Hours of work: As & when required

You’ll be an integral part of our business, someone who has the flexibility to work on a casual short-term basis during times of pressure or staff shortages. You’ll work for up to 12 weeks, as and when required, with no fixed shift pattern or guaranteed hours. You will need to hold a full UK driving licence carrying no more than 6 penalty points.

You will usually start by sorting the mail in a loud busy environment so you can deliver it later that day. You’ll deliver the mail in all weathers on foot, bike or vehicle, travelling 6 to 8 miles each day and carrying around 8 heavy mailbags a day (weighing up to 16kg). Delivery roles always involve a high degree of physical activity. You must be flexible to cover in Larne, Ballyclare & Antrim Delivery Offices when required.

You need to consider how you will get to work each morning, as public transport may not be available.

Problem is the hours are as and when! If they were to get say a regular 20 or so for 12week,I can seepeople going for it! but imagine the interview when you are told it couldbe one or forty! Sadly, this kind of casual work will only appeal to those who want to make a quick buck on the side, who'll have no real commitment to the job!

Certainly looks like the new agreement encompasses all aspects of recruitment too - like protecting full time jobs. Have a guess who'll be employed the next time a full timer leaves ..................................... nope no prizes for guessing correctly.

You'd be surprised! There are Agency staff, who've worked with us for years. But when their shift changes, they still get a phone call the same day, to tell them. So for example: They might get a phone call in the morning, telling them they're on Lates from today. When they've been on Earlies for weeks. And yet, they still do it.

I'm not saying it's right. Far from it! It's a disgraceful situation. How are they supposed to plan anything, if they can have their shift changed at a few hours notice?!?!?
But my point is, that there ARE people willing to do that, rather than go on the Dole.

There was I am sure an agreement in the past that did not allow the consistent employment of casuals on a permanent basis - are they paid by Royal Mail or the Agency - and if they have been there for years then there must have been vacancies that should have been filled by agreement with the CWU surely.

They're employed by the Agency. And yes, they are covering Duties that should have been filled years ago. But the Duties are supposedly being left open for when other offices close, then there's somewhere for the displaced Posties to go. But this has been going on for years, and I only know of a couple of cases of people coming in from elsewhere to take these Duties. So either they don't like the option of working here, or it's a bluff to keep using Agency long term. I don't really know which it is.

We're not talking large numbers here though. There's about a dozen on my shift, which is only a small minority. But that's not the point, really is it?

I have heard of agency staff in mail centres, but only once in my time have I seen agency staff in the DO and believe me - once was enough. There was about 5, mostly unkempt and not too amenable - one left the office at 10 a.m. and returned at 4 pm without delivering a single letter! When he was told they would ring him if they needed him - he wanted to speak to the rep - even though he was agency and not in the union. Mind you with the influx of part timers they don't need agency staff - keep someone on 25/30 hours and they will work more hours not by choice but of necessity.

I work in an RDC. We've had Agency staff on and off, for as long as I've been there. And quite frankly, I know exactly what you mean about some of them. They get no training at all (other than being told where the fire exits, first aid room, etc. is). But the ones who've been before, and the ones who've been with us for years, are just as good as the rest of us.

:sad:About 4 years ago, our office did have agency staff come in, but it was a disaster all round. the agency boys had been misled into thinking they may have been kept on, which of course never happened, and most quit after a couple of weeks anyway,couldn't stand the rainy days and heavy bags!
