SIX MAIL WORKERS FIRED EVERY WEEK FOR STEALING POST

A CRIMINAL culture at the heart of the Royal Mail is costing the beleaguered carrier millions and threatening its future.

In the past six years 1,842 workers have been fired for stealing post – the equivalent of six workers sacked every week.

Last year it cost Royal Mail £10million to compensate customers whose post had been stolen or lost.

The revelation will rock the postal service which is facing a huge £10billion pensions black hole and savage job cuts.
In the past 12 months Peterborough postman Alec Clark, 35, stole pornographic DVDs and women’s underwear and was jailed for six months.

Postman Steven Smith, 29, of Northern Ireland, stole cash from birthday cards before being caught in a sting.

Investigators put “test” cards in his sorting box. He was ordered to do 200 hours’ community ­service.

Ian McKeith, 47, of Macclesfield, Cheshire, received 200 hours’ community services after stealing £4,000 in postal surcharge fees to spend on fruit machines.

The Sunday Express obtained a request about Royal Mail under Freedom of Information legislation.

We asked: “How many staff have been fired as a result of being convicted or cautioned for the theft of post?”

He said: “It would be reasonable to assume that in some instances, staff are simply ‘let go’ rather than have to start the wheels in motion in terms of a lengthy investigation. On that basis, the scale of the problem could be worse than we are led to believe.

We do live in an increasingly dishonest society and Royal Mail delivery depends largely on trust.”

A Royal Mail spoke-sman said: “The Royal Mail constantly reviews security to ensure the continuing integrity of the mail.

“We have a zero- tolerance approach to any dishonesty and, where there is evidence, we seek to bring offenders before the courts.

“While the overwhelming majority of all lettersposted arrive safely, we remain very vigilant to any risk to the operation,
including any threat from criminals outside Royal Mail who target postmen and women to steal the mail they are carrying.”

Six sacked per week, but how many staff do Royal Mail employ ? No excuse ever for theft but it would be helpful to get it in proportion and know what the percentage is that are untrustworthy.

TBH I've never made any secret about it and yes, they are all obtained quite legally....................having them sent over from Japan in sealed packets is legal right??

"A CRIMINAL culture at the heart of the Royal Mail" - that suggests most Royal Mail employees are thieves, not perhaps 1% and it just goes to show how disreputable journalism has become in recent years - it wasn't that bad before Wapping replaced Fleet Street so I blame Thatcher, and I blame her too for thefts of mail having increased since her time with the 'no such thing as society' attitudes.
