The cancelling of the ballot for industrial action at BT by the CWU (Union cancels BT strike ballot, 6 July) is but another in a long line of examples of how collective labour law is loaded in favour of the employer. BT made it clear it would apply for an injunction unless the ballot was cancelled on the basis of what seemed to be minor and technical irregularities.
The proposal to require that all simple majorities in favour of industrial action must also equate to 40% of all those entitled to vote is absurd. This means those not voting count as "no" votes.
Labour MP John McDonnell's lawful industrial action (minor errors) bill, due to have its second reading as a private member's bill in October, is critical in restoring some semblance of democracy. It is surely something that Liberal Democrats would support if they were both liberal and democrats in the field of collective labour law.

This is something that should have been sorted during the last 13 years of Labour government, but wasn't, surprise, surprise.

But surely it should apply over all voting. Therefore the general election would be ruled void because of irregularities.
If corporate companies such as BT & RM can use this law then so should the general public.

The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.
The time has come for union.

Re: Labour law loaded in favour of employer
The last 13 years is littered with inconvenient truths, which are forever being swept under the carpet.
The Labour party cannot be saved; it is too far down the road to being a party of social democracy rather than democratic socialism.
The link with labour should be based on a pragmatic proven case, not on history or emotion. If individuals want to be members of the LP let them and support them and use them as the veichle by which we influence labour policy. Support CWU members who have joined other political parties and take CWU views and policies to those other political parties.
What does thousands of pounds of CWU members money achive by affilating to labour, it achives plenty for Labour but nowt for us!!!!
Spend the political fund on supporting CWU activty in the political arena and supporting members involved with political parties, rather than pouring monmey in to political party bank accounts.
