It seems that Royal Mail are using the new 56mph regulations as a reason for imposing these changes. Can anyone tell me what speed the lorries and vans used to drive at? They must have been doing at least 80mph through towns and cities and topping a 100mph in rural ares if a reduction to 56mph is going to cause such an impact on the time the mail gets to the DO's. Anyway I thought we had national speed limits in this country, 70mph on motorways, 60mph on dual carrageways, 30/40 in towns etc. Just how much difference is 56mph going to make. Don't be fooled, it is to do away with your early shift allowance. One other point, if you can actually get over 30mph can you let me know which roads, as the ones down here are chockablok. :nana

They will lose £12.50 a week of pensionable pay

Shift allowances are not affected by the later starts apparantly, they are ringfenced for 3 years then built into basic pay after that
I work with colleagues how have worked for RM for well over 15 years each. I have worked for RM for about 6 years. Approx 18 months ago our start time was changed from 05.15 to 05.50. I have never recieved shift allowance but my colleagues where told that their shift allowance would be paid for 3 years. I understood that after 3 years they would lose the extra pay. Now, if this allowance is going to be built into their basic pay does this mean that they will be paid £12.50p more per week than I am for doing the same job?
That's what i dont understand,at my place we haven't recieved the shift allowance for years as we are5-45 starts.
So will i suddenly have a super dooper rise!!
Or will bods who recieved it be payed more than me?
The plot thickens!!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

There was a form circulated in our office this morning asking what problems people would face with a 6.15am start.

6.15 would suit me fine, however the whole point is that the Union is being ignored by RM and they are going direct to the staff with Union issues. If the Union says start at 6.15 then that is what I'll do, if a manager asks me about starting at 6.15 then I tell them to go speak to the area rep.

Our rep couldn't wait to sign for 06.30 start times, and that was nine months ago. He's been telling the branch staff asked him for the change. Funny, the sub rep asked the staff if anyone did ask for them, and only a couple of people admitted doing so. Habitual drunkards who can't get up after a shed full of ale etc.

I'm all for it but finishing work 1 hour later is a major change to your working practice and the don't appear to have consulted the union about it.

What is the point in having a contract if they can modify it wherever and whenever they choose?

I don't see how we can say we'll take the 6:15 start but not the 6 walks into 5 whithout the union, that is what negatiations are for.

If any DUM tries to impose later starts whilst under disagreement, go to the area rep/secretary and ask for a local ballot. Under the IR framework no exec action can be imposed whilst a disagreement is live.
