Waverton woman banned from owning a dog after her mongrel bit a postman

A DANGEROUS dog owner was banned from owning a dog for five years after breaching an order after her Staffordshire bull terrier cross bit a postman on the knee.

Sara Cox, 24, of Ringway, Waverton, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with an order from October to keep her dog Rocky under control, stipulating the mongrel must be on a leash, muzzled and under proper control in public at all times. She was also made to pay £400.

Chester magistrates heard on Friday that the 11-year-old dog was saved from being the recipient of a destruction order after Cox gave the animal to a group of Travellers days after the attack.

Anouska Youds, prosecuting, said: “Royal Mail postman Mervyn Jones was attacked by the dog, biting him on the right leg, on the knee..”

Three other witness also saw the dog in public, between April 10 and April 28, once being walked along Guy Lane without a muzzle and another time when the dog escaped into a neighbour’s garden.

Adrian Evans, defending, said: “The defendant’s home has a door that goes into the living room from the front door to a small porch .

“She opened the front door and the dog, unfortunately, has managed to reach up and open the door and, before the defendant can do anything, shot straight out.

“The defendant was extremely upset and most apologetic.

“She did everything she thought reasonable to ensure the dog was kept under control.”

Sentencing, magistrates’ chair Howard Faye said: “You are disqualified from owning a dog for a period of five years, you will pay £250 compensation to the postman , who was only doing his job, fined £135 and pay a victim’s surcharge of £15.”
